What was your worst Secret Santa?

As we're nearing christmas - closer and closer, just a few weeks away... I thought it was time for a topical discussion, and perhaps a bit of fun - with the best and worst secret santa's you have had over the years.

As I work in a small team, we've decided not to do it this year, but hope to have enough people next year to make it work!

Looking back, my worst was probably just the most un-imaginative, when I worked in America I got a hat and scarf! (well it was cold) and very nice it was too - but after I put so much thought into mine (a how to sell book, to one of the top sales people) I felt a bit let down!

If you are doing one this year, what are you planning - and if you've done one before, or been involved in one before what stories do you remember? I'll add some more of mine as the thread progresses!

I am a member of a craft forum. They have organised a secret santa this year. There are about 50 plus of us taking part up and down the UK. The crafters all have various talents. The item we make is not to exceed the value of £5 worth of components. We have all received someones name and address and the item is to be posted the first week in December but it wont be till after Christmas before we can get to find out who sent what. I havent been this excited about something in a long time. The last time I think I did secret santa was when I was about 20 and worked as a civil servant. Many many moons ago and I certainly cant remember what I got or gave!

I took part in an international Secret Santa last year and it was great as I hadn't had the opportunity for anything so much fun in a long time! We all had to register on a website (Elfster, I think) and give some ideas about what we wanted with a budget of around $20 (USD). Whoever was assigned your name could look at your suggestions and choose from the list or go their own way. Finding a suitable gift within budget, even using online shops in your recipient's country, was a challenge but I enjoyed it. We then had an online meeting when we all opened our gifts in turn (with webcams) and were able to thank our Secret Santa in person.

I've never received anything that hasn't been lovely but I do remember one workplace where a colleague (female) was less than impressed to receive a "slicer, chopper, dicer" kitchen tool!

I love Christmas and get excited every year.

We had ours split into boys and girls last year (when i had a real job) - one of the girls ended up with an iron, but didn't really see the funny side.....though I did.

As we have a small team I generally buy presents for everyone else, including their partners, and receive nothing in return.

I've done it every year for four years and each time I get nothing it hurts more.

I buy the boys bottles of Malt, Vodka, crates of beer, etc, never occurred to me to get anything back, goes with the territory.

I don't really expect anything back.

I just remember being given a nice gift by TopHat's former employer at his generous Christmas parties and how very wonderful it was and I wanted that for my staff. They work hard, they get a Christmas bonus but a thought out gift means a lot and is a pleasant punctuation during our Christmas meal.

About 8 years ago when I worked in a large DSS office I got given a remote control 'fart' machine. I opened it at our Christmas lunch and was really dissapointed. We went back to the office and I decided to put it under the christmas tree which was next to a door and a photocopy machine and every time someone passed I pressed the remote control and it would fart. It was so funny.

that was our first product and still a best seller. We did a week's envelope stuffing for the cash and bought 72 from the States back in 1999 and started selling them of a little website and we've never looked back.

Worst was an 'inflatable rottweiler in a tin' - I never opened the tin to find out.

Best was a book on language - I love words! Everyone at the Xmas party drinking and messing about and I was reading about ancient English words that have fallen out of use, but, methinks, verily, should still be bruited about our countryside...
