It seems that President Obama and his party have been totally thrashed at the polls today, exactly one year after his election - this after a number of very dirty tricks.
- In New Jersey, the Republican was limited to spend $11 million. The Democrat, a billionaire, was able to spend much more than twice this amount. The president campaigned for him personally five times and appeared in most of his commercials. There was a third candidate who was splitting the opposition vote. Amazingly, the Democratic Party made phone calls pretending to be the third candidate, asking citizens to vote for him - until they were found out on election day. After all this, the president's man lost - in a state that is heavily loaded with his supporters. This is like Labour losing Manchester.
- In Virginia, the swing against Obama and his party was 25%. That is absolutely huge. The opposition party won every position up for grabs.
- The third fiasco has yet to play out. In New York state, Obama thought he could win his party another seat by appointing a Republican as the army chief. For the by-election, the establishment of the Republican Party chose a left-leaning candidate. Amazingly, the locals objected and a new candidate stepped forward, representing a party he called the Conservative Party, and challenged the Republican and the Democrat. Less than a week before the election, and after hundreds of thousands of mail-in votes had been cast, the Republican pulled out and asked all her supporters to vote for the Democrat. In order to win, the independent must obtain over 55% of the votes (since mail-in voters can't undo their votes). We'll know tomorrow whether he managed it. It's unlikely, but if he does, it will be a total stunner.
The important point is that the papers are getting it all wrong. This has little to do with either party. From what I can tell, people are sick to death already with too much government. They want the government to back off, get out of their lives, and address the mounting debt. Over 90% of people are happy with their health care, so they really don't see why the government insists on taking it over at such enormous cost.
One of the beauties of the US is that the people trump the government. These elections, which are really not much more than polls or by-elections, provide an opportunity to kick an overbearing government in the teeth - and that's just what they've done. In his arrogance, though, I don't see President Obama caring one iota. He's so full of himself, he honestly believes he has monopoly on all that's right. Sadly, if he keeps marching along the same path, Americans may soon be playing monopoly with the dollar.
