Wellworths programme tonight on BBC1

I mention supermarkets because, as you even seem to be noting yourself, they are one of the biggest threats to a general merchandise retailer such as Wellworths. If they want their business to be a success they need to be able to provide better products, service and/or prices than, amongst other retailers, the supermarkets. Just common sense really!

And supermarkets are grocers? Have you visited one in the last decade?:D

yes i have they have got rather large and greedy havent they should stick to selling tins of beans and bags of sugar.

What they have done to small shops and independents is deplorable.

I would like to spend some time in Dorchester understanding the local community feeling. I was impressed that she had appeared to get the majority of Dorchester on her side and the marketing was not the traditional stuff but right into the heart of supporting local. This seems to be missing where I live. I think she has done brilliantly and hope the support lasts. I would be really disappointed if we later hear that Wellworths is struggling.

I would imagine that they are pretty well placed to respond to getting new lines as and when they become available, unlike woolies who were frequently taking a punt on lines for the entire business and often taking a hit. As a business they couldn't keep doing that, the more they tried, the less they knew what kind of business they were.
As an individual store, you might get away with that, but to keep on taking the hits on a national scale, the end was on the cards. The worst thing was that Woolworth buyers were buying almost a year in advance, their own lines, but the buyers weren't too clued up on some stuff.

I used to work for a printer who produced the gift tags and wrapping paper for both Woolworths and WHS, the difference was vastly different, it always seemed that Woolies were a year behind. It was an in house joke, that when WHS placed their order, we'd say " and we'll be doing the same for woolies next year" Woolies seldom innovated anything that they could call their own.

Wellworths can if they buy wisely remain in viable as a business, but unlike Woolies, they should get rid of the buyer they've taken on and get somebody with a track record.

Wow! What a mightily ill-informed post!!!!

Would be interested in knowing where you are getting your facts from!

unlike woolies who were frequently taking a punt on lines for the entire business and often taking a hit
- incorrect, Woolworths had a number of stores where products were trialled before being rolled out.

The worst thing was that Woolworth buyers were buying almost a year in advance, their own lines, but the buyers weren't too clued up on some stuff
- do you have insider knowledge? What do you think happens? Products are purchased and arrive in store the next day? I think you'll find that seasons are planned for well in advance and i would imagine that large Retailers will already know what they will be selling this Christmas.

- ahh, gift-wrap, that well known ultra dynamic product line ofyen used to base an opinion on a £2.5bn turnover retail chain.

Wellworths can if they buy wisely remain in viable as a business, but unlike Woolies, they should get rid of the buyer they've taken on and get somebody with a track record
- the only bit of your post that i can agree with, that buyer will be the downfall of Wellworths, and i also thought that the Manager was quite weak too.

From watching the program I was left with the believe that the way the buyer was acting was put on for the cameras, as the buyer looked like saying something sensible the cameras moved away from him.

I thought he came across as being very immature, esp when he was playing around on the computer and switched it when the boss came in.

A lot of the early teething problems in scanning appeared to be down to his lack of concentration in inputing the barcode info

And he lost all credibility for me with his insistence upon the wall of picture frames - very poor judgement which should have been over-ruled (in the nicest possible way) by the store manager

Although i think it was a great idea i think that it is doomed already - £38,000 and it only just did that in the first week with all the publicity etc.

I also thought it was sad when her child on national tv was saying how he never saw his mum :(
