I have a competitor that scores very highly for a keyword I want to score highly for, so I have been studying their site and I noticed they actually have 6 identical sites with 6 different domain names (no redirects).

They all cross link to one another via hyperlinks in the footer of the page.

How can they be in the number 1 position in Google with so much blatant duplicate content? I thought Google penalised sites for that

Are there any caonincal or Hreflang tags on the other sites?

What is there backlink profile like? If they've got loads of powerful backlinks they might well be able to outrank you with worse content.

If they really are duplicating their site without adding some kind of tag to inform search engines what's going on then they'll be in real trouble fairly soon...

Feel free to PM me the term and sites involved if you want me to have a look.

If you really want to beat these guys then obtain as many of their backlinks as possible and then go one step better to secure the top spot.

Contrary to popular believe duplicate content will not get your sites penalized, some of the biggest sites like huff post use curated content which is content off of other peoples sites and they still get millions of hits every single day.

I have also tested the theory on duplicate content and those pages with duplicate content I made years ago still rank in the top spots of google dispite all of the updates.

Now go get that top spot! ;)

I cant see powerful sites wanting to link to a site that is less powerful - the advantage isn't the same.

Love the stories of amazing backlinks that anyone can get, its just so funny its painful to hear.

If they have really duplicate content on these 6 sites, they are definitely going to penalized by Google in recent times. One reason for their higher keyword ranking may be they have taken strong backlinks from different sources. I you really want outrank them, do a proper backlink research for their websites. Find all possible strong backlinks from their sites and make backlinks for your own sites from these websites.

I hope that this will really help you to rank your keyword higher than this competitor.

There are still duplicate content ranking high in the SERP so its not new in the field.
The Websites or blog sites networking has something to do with their high rankings due to the related linking domains. It would be the visitors and users engagements to the sites in which Google consider as a great factor.

    A lot of non answers.

What do you mean by "a lot of non answers" Kindly clarify.

if you PM me the urls I'll let you know about their back links.

Why PM? If we can discuss it all here to benefit the other members.

I called them non answers as most of them don't say anything specific, ie they don't answer the question.

I suggested PMing the links, rather than posting here, as posting here could/would increase the number of back links to the competitor sites - probably not something the OP wants.

Also easier to PM back their back link profile rather than posting 100's of links here, which some would consider spamming.
