Hi,

Do links from other websites help your website achieve a higher Google search rank. If so, is it best for a one way link (from them to you) or a two way link from both websites?

right - relevance matters.

be careful of using link farm services as that's one of the quickest ways of getting your site delisted from search engines :)

reach out to site owners of similar or relevant sites and offer to exchange links.

What a useless article of little to no value that sounds like SEO advice from the 90's other than the fact it mentions Twitter and Facebook.

I can't understand why someone would write an article on something they clearly know nothing about.

If you have a newsworthy story, on the right hand side there are links from the BBC website, that would be great.

If you use a service for logo/design etc some will put a logo for previous clients.

Both are one way links!

'link farm' do you mean link exchange sites. If so, why would they get you de-listed.

nope - a link farm is a site setup to generate and distribute links attempting to artificially boost a sites ranking in a search algo. Not to be confused by official directories or link exchanges with valid sites.

Ultimately 'UK Business directory'. I started going for 'Great British Business directory' and 'British business directory'.

The searches for the ones in bold above have pretty much zero traffic, you need to come at it from a different angle,

don't forget a significant relevance is still tied back to the actual domain name. also long tail seo can help for such competitive keywords.

here's a live example we're actually working on to demonstrate long tail in it's simplest form:

oxford street is a very competive keyword and very difficult to rank high - try it. our site http://oxfordstreet.tel is not on the first page (no surprises there!)

but users often search a little deeper, say they want bik bok its likely they would type bik bok oxford street
now, we've setup a url for this and no surprises we're on the first page (note: it's probably fair to say this may be partly due to that not being a very searched term, but hey it at least demo's my point ;) )

we're also looking to setup some uk business directories, pm if you're interested in discussing more as there may be some synergy...

right, you're better off going long tail and seeing what words are being searched often in conjunction with your main keywords and target those.

generally, best to be 1 way. but if the recip is with a popular page on a site much bigger than yours then consider that also

Anyone tried article submission? If successful you can end up with a lot of quality back links. I've tried this technique and it worked out pretty good for me.

Yes i did it recently it was a good boost in terms of seo, lets hope i manage to spin a lot of backlinks from it,

All form of paid linking are deemed illegal by google, if they think you are trying to cheat their system in order to make your website rank higher, they will penalise you. This includes link exchange sites and link farms. Consider the quality of the site that is linking to you and not the numbe ros sites linking to you.

20 high quality links can help your google PR far better than 10000 bad ones.

Cool, then all we need to do is buy links on behalf of our competitors and they will be removed from the index leaving all the traffic for us :)

if you make comnents with links, try to be as relevant to the subject being discussed as much as possible. If you follow this rule you will succeed. That's why many companies which sell this type of services fail, because it takes a lot of time to post in the right place.

You know i feel quite foolish for not having tried that already!

If you buy links the worst thing that can happen is the links won't pass any value and as this is why you bought them this is what hurts you, not a Google penalty.

Google wants to nail people selling links not people buying them.

Also it's worth noting it's perfectly OK to buy links so long as you ensure they are no follow. These will pass traffic but not juice.

Hope this helps.
