Website Costs-Guidance Needed

Hi all,

I got a quote today for my proposed site which was £1500. This includes design, hosting, support, unlimited pop3's etc.

Is this a good deal? Also it is a local web designer/hoster and we are getting on well so also bearing in mind friendship...

That really depends on what is involved in your website, saying 'how much is a website' is much like saying 'how long is a piece of string'.

Post your site spec here and we will have a better idea.

This includes design, hosting, support, unlimited pop3's etc.

Which means all your eggs are going into one basket - never a good idea in business.

By all means get them to design the site, but register the domain yourself, and buy hosting from those that are best at that. Never, ever, lock yourself to a single supplier.

 

Creo is dead right, every site is different and a lot depends on the functionality more than anything else and also everyones prices and skills are different.

I agree with the other posters. Without knowing your requirements I can only offer general advice but if it's of any help that's a decent budget for good quality entry level website offering content management, online forms, newletters etc.

Sorry, I have a niche website in the recruitment sector. It will basically be the same sort of thing as the big fish in recruitment i.e. Monster, Jobserve etc.

It's using a decent application (can't remember the name though) and has comprehensive searches, billing info etc. All I can tell you is that it isn't iProfile.

How much does the application cost, is it free, or is it a paid for app?
How much design work are you getting?
What type of hosting are you getting? (Shared, vps, dedicated, specs?)

It would cost a *lot* more than 1.5k to try to seriously compete with a market leader mind...

£1,500 for an off the shelf system, design customised to you, a few modifications to the system, hosting for one year, as well as support for 12 months seems reasonable to me.

The hosting is an irrelevant cost as it sounds like your chap/chappette has a hosting account of some type probably a reseller and will therefore be costing them next to nothing.

If the app he is supplying is open source then £1,500 is a little high IMHO...

The word unlimited to be honest would be my main concern. Nothing in reality is unlimited and so what people do that are offering unlimited anything is base their offer on an estimated average use which can be very inaccurate at times - unlimited traditionally is the domain of the budget end of the market rather than pro.

Even if it is free software £1500 may not be a bad price if the engine itself will be customised and it isnt just a skinning exercise.

the only thing I could see that was unlimited was the Pop3's he referred to in the original post.
