We opened our shop on 22nd November 2008 ....... exactly 3 years ago today. I can't quite believe how fast the time has gone or how much things have changed since we first wrote our business plan - 3 different levels of VAT, the dramatic downturn in the economy generally, a couple of major suppliers we used in the beginning have gone out of business, our average spend per customer has decreased from around £18 to just over £9.
During that time we've learned alot, made some mistakes, and had a few successes but still have a long way to go before we get to where we would like to be.
I thought that by the time we hit the 3 year anniversary we would be in a position to take a reasonable salary (we're nowhere near) and hoped that we might be able to take someone on to help run the shop (no chance).
On the plus side, we haven't had to increase our borrowing to stay afloat, we are able to pay our overheads and suppliers and have increased our range of stock quite considerably. We are becoming known locally for having a good stock of knitting yarns which sell really well - knitting has become much more popular than we had anticipated it would but not many shops stock a good range at the moment so this has been a great way to get new customers in.
Our art & craft classes do well, and the growing trend for handmade and unusual goodies is great for us - we now have 61 artists and crafters selling their handmade goods through our shop so we are able to offer customers things that they really can't find anywhere else.
The big question I suppose is ...... had we known a recession was looming would we have opened the shop in the first place? Probably not ......... but I'm glad we did!!!!:D

Well done Doodles!!

3 years in this enviroment is fantastic, just think of all the big boys that have gone under in that time eh

and no, I probabley would have have stayed in employment if I knew what was around the corner and carried on being misserable in my job, but like you i'm glad I did as well, I may be worse off but there's nothing like waking up and actually looking forward to going to work!

Good for you Doodles.

And what does this show? Business plans, cash flow charts and P&L forecasts are not worth the spreadsheet they are printed on. Initiative and the ability to change on a daily basis to suite circumstances are far more valuable these days.

Well done Doodles

happy 3rd birthday :D

We have passed the 1 year mark in Lincoln. The way the world is going makes me wonder if I will be lucky to last 3 years

I've been to the shop and even spend some money there.

Staff are a bit iffy though. Skirts nowhere near short enough.

Do you sell buttons? Lady in my office is a keen knitter and can't seem to find any she likes locally. We're in Basingstoke.
Yes we do - they're handmade ones though! Som are made from polymer clay (they are washable, of course) and others are fabric buttons. We do sell a small range of ordinary buttons as we also sell wool so we kind of have to do the ordinary accessories, but yes, We have buttons!
Let me know what sort of things she is after and I can let you know if we have anything which might be suitable.

THanks everyone for your good wishes ...... we are really lucky to be surviving in the current climate I think!
We held our first "knit-wits" workshop today for people wanting to learn how to knit or improve their skills, 5 people turned up (which I was pretty pleased about!) and we sold lots of wool, needles and knitting patterns on the back of it. They've all re-booked for next week too, which is fab!
