Virus email attack from Ditepartnership

Got this email today my antivirus stoped it opening.

From: email@ditepartnership co uk

Thank you for your request, your details are attached!
Dont open attachment it's a virus!

Just checked ww.Ditepartnership.co.uk their contact email is the same. I never contacted them for anything or replied to them. So why would they send my details in an attachment. They look dodgy look at their site with a home made logo.

Like most SPAM, virus laden emails often have the "From" address forged, and probably the return path and the sending IP forged as well.

If you have access to the full SMTP headers of that email, and can prove that it was sent by Ditepartnership, then you would do them a favour by advising them. If not, and unless you are running a mail server you won't have, use the delete key.

I have my AV scanner set to silently delete viruses - it's easier that way.

Investing in good quality and professional versions of security software is vital for any business. As this is tax deductable do not use the free versions but buy the BEST you can afford. Get a computer expert to set it up for you too allowing ONLY the services you need.

I have my business software & email on a diff machine from my home ones. It is so easy to go to a website and pick up some nasty software which can infect your compouter and send emails out from your machine without you knowing it!

Not true, there is no protection against spammers using your domain name, which more than likely has come from someone else's address book. The resultant mess is known as backscatter.

KM, I did not say this would stop spam. As you say this is caused in part by backscatter it is also as a result of unprotected computers with client email databases, something all businesses have a responsibility to prevent.

I myself have experienced this when a supplier of mine had his computer 'attacked'

I did not say that the software would stop spammers - but often small companies get compromised because they have obtained a large list of business emails contacts and their system is attacked because they do not have appropriate protection (that is virus, adware protection etc.). managing spam (filtering & deleting) is only part of the solution - we all have a responsibility to protect our data and our potential clients.

I read many posting on this and other forums of businesses only have free avg - while this is a good product it is only part of the solution and as abusiness we should be using appropriate professional solutions.

This thread is going badly off topic, and perhaps should be deleted by one of the mods.

The OP alleged that an email with a virus attached had been sent by a company.

Unless the OP has the headers to prove that is where it came from, then it is likely that it didn't send it, it was sent by someone else, the Sender address being forged.

To add that the alleged sender's website is poorly designed adds nothing to determining the real source of the email.

If that was my company being spoken of without proof, I would not be best pleased.

To debate computer security in general does not help the OP to deal with the situation.

I made this topic to warn you all of this virus attachment in case you got one just like it. I had to include the senders email so you know before you open it. It may not be from that company. The from email addy I put is the one I got as the senders email. Not everyone will have an up to date virus checker so it may be too late by the time you open the attachment. I have sent the company an email two days ago to say that I had got a virus sent to me and their email was used but I've had no reply.
