Vaccine anyone?

For someone who is so against no lockdowns it's staggering they can also oppose track and trace?

1,500,000 tests yesterday by the way.

One million, five hundred thousand.

To achieve what exactly ? Particularly now that enough people have been vaccinated to reduce serious illness and death by at least 95% (allowing for not everyone having the vaccine, which is their choice)

You really do not understand do you ? I want to get back to normal and am prepared to put up with a reasonable amount of risk to do that.
You, and a few others on here, would, it would seem, not want to put up with any risk at all no matter how much it affected your, or other people's, lives. That is the nub of it, and has been right from the start, only now we have had such an almost surreal vaccine rollout the argument is tilting more and more in my favour (and the millions of others who think like me).

Track and trace is the only way we will be able to keep one step ahead of the new variants and will prove vital if we are to keep on top of Covid
Covid is very much a moving target
We may not be able to keep ahead of the new variants without future lockdowns but it gives us our best chance
You should be grateful it's there
We are hoping to control Covid from now on. Track and trace is going to be vital to make that happen.
The scientists made that clear only the other day. We will need a smaller amount of social distancing alongside track and trace next winter.

Ah yes, the variants, like the much trumpeted Kent variant which actually lowered the death toll in London ? Do you mean that one ?

The scientists made that clear only the other day. We will need a smaller amount of social distancing alongside track and trace next winter
Those scientists can go and undertake their social experiments in their own households and leave the rest of us to get on with living. To put it a different way, they can take a very long walk, off a very short pier.

Question for you ? The Labour party's policy is, like your's, more suppression, and they are way behind in the polls. Why is that ?

So if a new variant gets out of control and our hospitals are overloaded again you are happy for us to have to face lockdowns again?

You are prepared to take that risk are you?

We know you are willing to risk tens of thousands of other people's lives are you willing to risk having to lockdown again if we don't control the new variants

They are the danger - however many times you say they are not will not change that

They are new variants mutating all the time

Test and trace can help us avoid having National lockdowns if we get new dangerous variants

I'm eligible for a vaccine. I've had the invite. Funny thing. The invite, the NHS page, everywhere they talk about vaccine they talk about "the vaccine" like there's only one.

Don't ask questions about which one you'll be getting or anything like that. Just turn up, take whatever you're given, trust the experts. And most of the population are so terrified of this Covid thing that they're all rushing to take whatever they're given (without any thought to whether they've already got antibodies, or having a test to see if they're likely to have an allergic reaction to the vaccine ...or anything).

Just queue up, get "the vaccine", be grateful. Like sheep headed for the dip.

The government's policy is a slow release of lockdown, backed up by test and trace, and they're ahead in the polls. Why is that?

Because people have nobody else to vote for, apart from Farage's lot. Labour are even worse than the Tories on Covid, and their poll ratings are appalling.
But here's a prediction for you. If the death rate is on the floor by May and they have elections, and we're still suppressed, Farage's lot will do better then anyone expects. Even I might vote for them and to me Farage is the anti Christ.

I had an invite too. I live in Sheffield and the nearest available vaccination centre is, apparently, in Wakefield !
Even more bizarre, it will not let you book your jab unless you book the second one in about three months. How many people even know what they will be doing in three months ? ! ?

I had my first jab last week, although I didnt know which vaccine I was to be given. To me it wasnt that much of an issue. Call me old fashioned, but from the information Ive looked, at either vaccine is a much better prospect than declining it. Im not terrified of covid, Ive looked at the deaths by demographic and feel that if I caught the virus theres a really good chance I will survive.

You suggest that free will has been taken away "like sheep heading for the dip" I thought the point of dipping sheep whether 3 or 4 of them or a flock of 1000 is to prevent ticks and stuff I have yet to read of a single sheep dying from being dipped.

The governemt is trying to vaccinate millions of people as quick as is possibe, I suppose they could send you a form with 20 pages of information (thats what someone with your need for detail may need, but remember many dont understand what a vaccine actually does. Lets make the process as simple as possible eh.

When I went for my jab I was told which variant it was, after I asked, and before the needle was inserted I was asked if I was happy to proceed, believe me if I wasnt, I would have declined and walked away.

I still had Dolly Parton's "vaccine vaccine" playing in my head, to infer I am influenced by the media is absurd.

Trying to book my vaccines is proving problematic, and I have heard from others they had exactly the same issues.
The first three times I went on the site is was bringing up places in Wakefield and Manchester.
Eventually on the 4th visit it allowed me to book one in Sheffield, but I had to book my second jab at the same time, and that is right when we're on holiday ! Neither of the two clinics I have so far tried would let me book a second jab either the week before or the week after.
So, I could have already had my first jab booked for Saturday, but because I cannot book my second I cannot even book my first ! Not impressed....
Sods law dictates I've made it this far through the pandemic but will catch Covid in the next week or two, and despite having about a 499 out of 500 chance of surviving I'll get the chop !

You are advised NOT to go on holiday until 3 weeks after the 2nd jab. Why did you book a holiday when you did?

Why not ?
People have been going on holiday all through this pandemic, I wasn't aware the govt are now officially saying everyone should put their lives on hold till 3 weeks after their second Covid jab.
Post rational.....

You think we should stop testing? That's what the "test" part of "Test and Trace" means. That's where most of the money is spent.

Also, it most certainly has not been "proven" not to work. The report states it's hard to demonstrate the benefit. That's something very different.

I have be clear in my view right from the start that test and trace will never work, certainly in this country, and definitely not well enough to eliminate Covid.
I remember listening to a programme on it which came to the very same conclusion.
Basically the great majority of people will make some attempt self isolate if they are proven to have Covid (though even that will be less likely now that pretty much all those at significant risk of Covid have been vaccinated). But very much fewer will self isolate because they might have a 1 in 50 risk of having Covid, and, it will be far fewer now because of the spectacularly successful vaccination programme.
Test and trace, national or local, is a waste of money, it will never work as well as it should. They can spend those eye watering amounts of money on better things, like increasing the number of available intensive care beds, or electrifying more of the the railways come to that.

My Vaccine centre said it to me when discussing the date of the 2nd jab.

COVID-19 travel
Under current UK COVID-19 restrictions, you must stay at home. It is illegal to travel abroad for holidays. Check the rules in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Do not travel unless you have a legally permitted reason to do so. In England, you must complete a declaration form for international travel (except for travel to Ireland).

Check our advice for all the countries you will visit or transit through. Some countries have closed borders, and any country may further restrict travel or bring in new rules with little warning.

To enter or return to the UK from abroad (except from Ireland), you must follow all the rules for entering the UK. These include providing your journey and contact details, and evidence of a negative COVID-19 test before you travel. When you arrive, you must quarantine and take additional COVID-19 tests. This will take place in a managed quarantine hotel if you enter England from a red list travel ban country, or enter Scotland.

But that's now, it isn't in three months.
As it happens our holiday is in the UK, but even if it wasn't that's no business of those giving people the vaccines. Their job is to encourage as many people to have the vaccine as possible, and then give it to them.

I've not looked at the political polls. Wasn't aware the Tories were miles ahead.

If they are it's not down to people disliking Labour policies as nobody knows what they would actually do different

It will be down to the fact that the majority of the population think the Govt are doing a decent job at a very difficult time for the whole world

And trust them to finish the job

Yes, of course, if Dolly Parton sang about it then ...my bad.

@Ian J , I'll have you know that despite my good looks and boyish charm, I'm old enough to qualify. I meet the 55 y/o threshold (though I must be just a kid to the likes of you :p)

Your post got me looking at the latest opinion polls

About 47% think the government’s roadmap for easing lockdown restrictions in England is set at the right pace. However, 31% believe it is too quick and 12% believe it is too slow.

Not even remotely close is it Justin?

You are very much in the minority aren't you?

(Please don't reply with a graph or 95 per cent anywhere in a sentence)

I take it you haven't been on holiday (of any sort) for at least a year ?
Or are you being inconsistent ?

I was on holiday this time last year, before any lockdown was announced (or even mooted, for that matter). Barbados since you ask. It was all quite surreal, laying on a sun lounger watching the UK descend into hell.

Since then I've not left the country, and (as far as I'm aware) not broken any of the rules or advice.

YouGov from last week....

CON: 45% (+4)
LAB: 32% (-4)
GRN: 7% (-)
LDEM: 6% (+1)
REFUK: 3% (-)

I keep hearing about these polls but they do not correspond anywhere near my own experience of talking to people.
If they are a true reflection it just goes to prove all that government effort at scaring people has worked, which is even more worrying.
1 - Because it shows how easily scared the supposedly intrepid British really are.
2 - When are they going to stop being scared ? Will they ever stop being scared ?

You and your acquaintances probably aren't a very good sample let's be honest Justin?

Now you belittle the intelligence of the UK population to make their own minds up ?

Apart from the 12 per cent who think lockdown relaxation is too slow of course?

They of course are the rational ones

It's not about being scared. I'm not scared at all.

I just want the country to move forward now. And don't want to ruin the progress we have made rushing things and pandering to the extremists like you

Just maybe normal members of the public avoid having conversations with you full stop or just nod in agreement when you start a rant etc. Much easier to do that.

Is that the poll published on the 22nd of Feb ?
I wonder if it'd say the same now, or in a few weeks.....

No it was a poll that took place on 26th Feb - not sure how long before it was published after that

But you say that kind of stuff all the time

You were warning of serious civil unrest in the UK 6 months ago if lockdowns didn't end very soon (if you remember)

You must be shocked and disappointed theyve never happened?

I did not say that, yet again you are misquoting me.
What I said was the opposite :
1 - Cold wet weather puts people off rioting
2 - Frustration will peak in the late spring when (A) the weather gets better & (B) it becomes obvious that suppression is no longer required to stop Granny snuffing it.
The Government have assured us all that everything will go back to normal in June which may be enough to head off social unrest, plus the fact they continue to pour Billions into furlough.
However, Aniela (that font of all knowledge who always puts on links to where he gets his "facts") reckons that June date is a big con and significant suppression measures will remain, so we will see what happens if it is.

On the subject of Granny snuffing it, deaths are down 87% (apart from London [as in right next to Kent London] they're down 94% there), and, even more to the point, :
The Times Mon (1st March 21, p11) :
Public Health England (PHE) reports that deaths from Covid-19 in the over 75s have dropped by 40% in the last week and admissions to intensive care among the over 85s have dropped to near zero in the last couple of weeks.
So, basically Granny is already highly unlikely to snuff it, not from Covid anyway.

You mark my words if this goes on much longer their will be significant social unrest,

How many people have you sampled (talked to)?

Are they a representative cross-section of the country?

"Twitter" was stunned that Jeremy Corbyn didn't win the last election, because "Twitter" said he would. They failed to realise "Twitter" does not necessarily give a fair reflection of the population.
