Using Magento E-commerce - Is anyone else?

Hi Folks,
I'm currently using magento (V 1.3.2.1) for my site and just wondered if there were any other new or exisiting users (or pro's ) that would be willing to swap operational and technical set-up hints and tips with me. I've got it running okay but I'd really like to get to know some basic (and advanced) tweaks to make it super smooth.

I don't integrate the CSS templates with the magento module, and have limited application knowledge, I have someone for that, I just want to get to know magento better on the functional set-up side. I've watched a lot of their tutorial videos but prefer real life situations.

We host a lot of Magento stores, but I personally hjave not yet had too much experience with it. In terms of getting it working faster, I'm sure the guys in our hosting department would be willing to give you some pointers if you asked.

I have tried it once (last year) and found Magento to be very bloated and sluggish personally and pretty much overkill for a majority of applications ... maybe they've made improvements since though.

We're just setting up our website in Magento too (hosted with NuBlue) and I know our developer's just really cutting his teeth on it, so would be great to hear any tips people might have. Not sure how much we'll be able to contribute though!

For example - the drop-down menu on our site is for some reason hiding behind the other divs on the product pages in IE7 and we're having a bit of a nightmare trying to work out why....

Yes I'm there too, my developer is in the same situation. He has done well though. I know we had a problem with the drop down's too but they solved that. An issue with the CSS I believe but I can't help much more on that one. He's still working on the site as a whole so if I find out and understand it i'll let you know. I'm no means a developer of any sort.

I'm personally more interested in the functionality of magento and how to set all the attributes, example: to give me regional delivery set-up, tier pricing and price break set-ups etc etc etc, I've got the basics but would like to know more first hand to get it more functional.

We've done fairly well setting up our delivery options using the (free) Royal Mail extension, but then we weren't trying anything too fancy. Most of the other shipping extensions seem very US-centric, though I think you can configure the Table Shipping option to let you have different delivery rates for different locations.
