I'm looking into methods of taking payments and was considering hiring a pdq machine but I've heard that you can take payment with an iphone and an app for this, I can't find anything to say whether this service is available in the UK though. Does anybody know anything about it, whether it's available in the UK and which app is best?

Thanks

Yes you can take card payment with an iphone and any basic mobile phone as long as it is Java enabled and I have been using it for about 10 years. If you look at the mpos demo on youtube that should help you. I have found it very useful especially for doing busines at shows and for taking card payments over the phone.

Java has nothing to do with it, and the iPhone doesn't run Java.

Looks good. Been considering a card payment terminal for my new business and this looks like a cheap option.
However - you will still need a merchant account with an aquiring bank which it is advised you arrange before getting the app!

Might not be as cheap an option as I had first thought but at least you haven't got a terminal to loose - just keep a close eye on your phone!

Thanks for the heads-up on this, much appriciated.

I was wondering if things have moved on since the original poster first asked his question. I'm in the same boat so would like to ask the question again.
What services are there now for the iPhone and who provides the best service and best rates?

Could you setup an ecommerce terminal with cardsave or somewhere then just access a payment page using the web browser? Would cost about £20/month

As a consumer, would anyone actually let someone type their credit card number into their phone when you were buying something?

There is absolutely no way I would.

we do it every day. not in a phone but it's no different from going in to a shop a putting your details into a chip and pin machine. This type of transaction is common place now in the field I'm entering, of course if someone was not happy using a portable chip and pin device (Iphone) they could always pay cash.:)

I use Adelante every day on a Samsung Galaxy S2, works fine, you get the authority code and even an option to email a receipt to your client.

No problems with getting any details myself, maybe it's how you ask and explain things.

PayPal is a good merchant account to have regardless of what comments people make we have used them for 7 years with a lot of daily transactions.

You can use the virtual terminal on any phone / tablet / ipad / etc

Hi MH1, I think I looked into Adelante and they seemed expensive.
How do you find them.

Fine, the system doesn't cost myself a penny, but it does what it says it does from an operational point of view.

Only problem with paypal is their fees are sooooo high. I was spending about £150/month at one point with paypal . I'm sure theirs many more spending more than this too.

this topic is very interesting for the business I'm thinking of starting (a restaurant). I just fear it could look unprofessional to pass people a phone to put their details into. What is the interface like? any screenshots?

Magtek produce a similar reader device which plugs into your iphone/ipad and compliments some existing software. It's basically a magnetic card reader rather than a chip and pin device.

You'll have to google magtek and look for their bullet device as I cannot post links.

My business means I'm on the road so I don't want to carry to many bits of kits, so if my phone can do the job it's better for me. But if it's cheaper to have a chip and pin machine and the customer is more comfortable with this it might be a cheaper option.

Whichever payment application / system you decide to use please be aware of the of the fraud risks. We recently commissioned the Cebr to produce a report outlining the economic impact and opportunity involved for retailers of new payments channels (mobile commerce). With mobile commerce the fraud risks are less understood as there is less history involved with the transaction and there is less criteria to check each transaction against. However these risks are manageable as explained in report - may be worth a read if you are interested.

I also would like to find a reliable credit card service/ app and was looking at something called Card Ease - but this seems to be linked to Blackberry at present. I just wondered if anyone has heard of this or can definitely recommend a simple mobile way of taking card payments.

I just signed up with izettle, seems OK (they don't accept visa yet) and got a free card reader to plugin to my phone, not sure how clients will react to inserting their card into a phone and then entering their pin though.......

My customers are ok with it, I use it when I am at craft fairs etc, I use a static machine in my shop, but iZettle works a treat when out and about - always ready to sell a T Shirt to someone - no cash? not a problem I pull out my card reader and plug it in the phone and hey presto - I love that I can email a receipt from the phone

Will be so much better if they can do a deal with visa, I am not sure but would guess 75% of cards are visa.

i like very much the one proposed by syspay but also izettle square etc...
with syspay you can start accepting payments in 2 minutes. with izettle you need a device but is very user friendly, square is for USA only for the time being...
syspay is free for the trial then if i am not wrong costs 1.99%

You don't need a device for izettle, you can enter the card information manually, althought there is a slightly higher % charged for this method.

in 2013 Google predicts that 99% of searches will be through mobile devices.

Is that stat on your website correct? it seems awfully high to me.

You could use syspay or contact Adelante they have a similar system called taxipay, don't know if they will let non taxi drivers use it. Adelante's version is at 6.5% charge. but it's in the UK.

The thought of having to get another bank account just accept cards is a pain the rear, i just don't want the hassle of merchant account.
