I'm writing to you in the hopes of getting some advice and help on starting my own business. My family has been perfecting a traditional tea with healing benefits for generations, and I've had nothing but positive feedback from over 1000 people. I would really like to start my own brand and want to know where to begin.

I'd be grateful for any tips, guidance, or resources you could recommend. This is my first attempt at starting a business, so I'm sure there are a few bumps in the road that I'm not aware of yet.

A majority of people in the UK are brand loyal, so first, you need to understand who your target market is.

Depending on the market, you will need to adjust the marketing accordingly.

Ensure that your tea meets UK standards! Look at the Food Standards Agency for guidance.

Also, ensure that you know your costs.

This s a BIG question, which will need some serious thought and research on your part.

First and foremost, are you planning to position this as a tasty tea, with apparent health benefits, or as a health product. They are very different.

Friends of mine got involved with Chaga tea. Actually did Ok selling it on line (with a fair amount of press coverage on Chaga itself). They got to the doorstep of a big order with a healthfood chain, but dipped out when they saw the criteria around packaging, labelling & compliance. They now sell it online for fun & pocket money.

Do you have any authoritative research demonstrating these health benefits ? 1000 people saying it makes them feel good won't cut it I'm afraid.

Which country are you setting your business up in?

'Positive feedback' is only encouragement - it's not money in your pocket to fund future production and running of the business.

Some good pointers already here: What market do you want to aim for? If you want to aim for larger volume markets, be prepared to invest in the right packaging and presentation from the outset.

You might be the best tea blender and taster in the land, but without the ability or assistance to get the product into the market place and to manage the finances you are doomed to failure.

I happen to have been close to the start up of Clipper Teas in a small barn on a farm down a country lane in West Dorset: Their first blending machine was a clean second hand electric concrete mixer, So it can be done....
