Starting a Family Website

I'm looking to start a family website that will consist of purely family photos.

I'd want it password protected, preferably server based, so that you have to log in to view the content - as obviously i'd rather that every Tom, Dick & Harry wasnt able to view.

I'd also like the uploading of new photos etc to be painless.

Anyone have any recommendations for software, hosting package, etc that will enable me to do this?

TIA

Get a hosting with php and google "sas php script". I cant put a link in as I do not have enough posts yet

A small script but could be ideal if you don't want to get people to register etc. just let the people who need to view know the password. you can change this for different folders for different parts of the family.

Hi, i have recently brought my 12 year old son his own DIY website. Which he loves. He was into game consoles etc...so i thought i'd try to steer him down the webdesign route. The software i brought is from a company called mistore. They do both ecommerce and web presence site. And they're great. My 12 year old has created his own pages, put links into you tube and uploaded loads of photo's

It cheap as chip. £299 set up fee and £9.99 a month.

drop me an email if you want to know anything more.

To be honest if it "will consist of purely family photos" do you really need a 'website'?

Why not just set yourself up with a Flickr account or similar?

For instance here is my public photos:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/91135231@N00/

Friends and family who log in will see additional sets that are marked as private. They can also comment on them etc...

Flickr will allow you to have a more memorable URL e.g http://www.flickr.com/photos/Your-Name/

You could even register you own domain and point it to you Flickr URL. Your domain name could point to a 'proper' website later if you decide you want something more than just photos.

Again if it's just photos you want this will save you a lot of hassle and is free for a basic account. A (very good value) pro account will give you unlimited storage space which effectively allow you to store and display your entire photo collection (something that could work out quite expensive using traditional hosting).

Set up a forum.

That will add to family things far more than a website which one person controls - this assumes that you are not all around the dinner table every night.

If you host with heart it is dead easy to instal phpBB3 - click and done.

You can run this alongside some picture hosting option. Job done. Communication up and more things happening.

The flickr route may be best for me as i'm not very technically minded. My only concern with this over hosting my own website would be the possible loss of photos should a problem arise with flickr

I would highly recommend Flickr or Google's Picasaweb.

It does what you need to. You don't have to update it to protect it from crackers as you would with WP or Gallery. They are unlikely to lose your pics and it means you are less dependant on yourself backing them up from your own server.

I agree. That's why I suggested Flickr. allquare is "not very technically minded" he could have a real problem protecting a forum from hackers. etc.

I also agree Flickr is less likely to "lose" the pictures than a cheap hosting deal were the user is responsible for backup etc.

Having said that you should still keep you own copy for you own convenience and piece of mind. With external hard drives being so cheap you have no excuse not to really.

Hiya if you want your own website where you can upload photos easily and do a little more try moonfruit. I have set my kids up their own account and its free if you put up with the ads. They have a membership only site so only their friends can access the site. Very good simple application.
