Start a charity

I have been doing charity events for a cause that is very close to my heart, although I have become disillusioned with the amount of money they seem to waste on admin, etc. When it was founded it was purely voluntary. This has caused me to think about starting my own doing similar with 100% of funds raised going to the cause. Does any one have any idea to go about this?

There are several ways of forming a 'charity', the two obvious ones are 'unincorporated charity' which is a committee of people operating a 'voluntary group', the other is 'incorporated charity' which is a more formal process of formation of a charity which requires registration with the Charity Commissioners.

Forming an unincorporated charity is relatively straightforward, whereas forming an incorporated charity is less so. Many groups of people operate as a voluntary group i.e. unincorporated charity, to start with until they reach a stage where it is necessary or beneficial to become an incorporated charity.

Which is suitable will largely depend on the charitable objectives and other factors.

Nearly every organisation needs PC's, paper, printers, envelopes, stamps, etc.. so I don't think it is possible to run with a 0% admin overhead.

No I understand, that just do not agree with them taking a 'salary'

Do I need several people to start a incorporated charity, as I feel for events etc it would have a lot more kudos and seem more professional and more likely for people not involved in the charity directly to donate.

Have you discussed with 'them' about the salary issue?

I founded a community group that ran a cafe with volunteers - I was responsible for the recruitment of 120+ volunteers.

As the venture grew it soon became impossible to continue with volunteers - The work was often a hard slog and demanding and volunteers often let us down at the last minute. So we made the transition to paid staff.

That caused 2 volunteers the utmost anguish but there truly was no other way. If we had continued with volunteers, our service would have continued to deteriorate and the local authority would have stepped in and taken the cafe off us.

I held consultation meetings with members, voluneetrs and other stakeholders and evidenced that we had no other ooption. Still, these 2 would not budge and they were very vocal and ended up spitting their dummies out as a result.

I'm not for one minute suggesting you are in the same position but I do find that especially when it comes to charity work and volunteers that people don't communicate as they should.

I would say you need 3 people to run a charity effeectively in the beginning: A Chairman, a Secretary and a Treasurer and maybe a committee of another 5 or so.

Plus you will probably need a £5K income before you can apply for Charity Commission registration.

If you have decided to give your amount charity then it is the right way to manage your business and thoughts.. It is the amount of money that will give you feed back definitely and make your profit maximum.

Well make some detail research on who large organizations collect money from their fund raising campaigns. Then definitely you will get benefit from their experiences. Good Luck and tell me as you got some good idea from their..

This is Prem Sapkota from Nepal .Now I am living in the London.I have genuine visa to carry out any business or work in the UK.Before I came here,I was involved in export business in Nepal and doing many social works.I am interested to live for the society alongwith a socially responsible business.

In my opinion, we can use our money in education to those who are needy person.To be frank,I have good contact to the local community in Nepal.Regarding your dissatisfaction in the way of expending money in administration we can simply avoid paying students fee only.

In some rural part of Nepal education is not a right but a luxury things so we can cover the gap.

I have some ideas in social work as I have worked in many community area like micro-finance,blood donation,polio eradication programme,plantation,HIV Aids awareness,library etc.I was actively involved in Rotary Club as well.
