Just sent this rather smug tweet

All Voipfone staff made it to work despite the snow. Just went downstairs and switched on their PCs. VoIP, free disaster recovery technology

My business ground to a halt yesterday due to the 6" of snow that fell through the night (not forecasted) Apparently Leeds city council has 'run out of grit'
Even if our vehicles could make it to customers houses - the matter of climbing on roofs in adverse weather conditions is not possible.
Unfortunately, we still have bills and wages to pay but with no income this is 'a little tricky'.
Two vehicles are attempting to work today. Fingers crossed!

I learnt to drive in worse snow than this, driving in steeply cambered side streets, stopping & starting. Chances are the tyres on the old rear wheel drive motor won't have been too clever either.

This lot hasn't been any problem to me so far.

The country grinds to a halt mainly because the Gov't tells people to stay at home and those that don't have no idea how to drive in these conditions.

The worst thing about the snow is having my disabled mother in law ring me up and regurgitate this morning's news broadcasts ad nauseum about the snow, and how she thinks the whole thing is a 'nightmare'.

She's safely tucked up indoors. Our sister in law has ensured she has enough food supplies and emergency heat in case there's a power cut. She's missed no medical appointments because of it.

How, for her, is all this snow a 'nightmare'?

This time last year i loved the snow (Missing time off school) but this year it really isn't great! I live in a village and work about 20 miles away, problem is, we couldn't get out this morning  We live half way down a "valley" and getting out was nigh on impossible, even the tractor got stuck! Have no idea what the main roads are like as we haven't got that far

We've had snow for three weeks now and over Christmas it really was a pain as we rely on couriers to get our goods out. It's been much worse over the last 48 hours and we haven't been able to ship goods because our couriers can't get around the country. That said, orders are down so it hasn't been worth forcing our staff to get into work when there's so little to do. I've told them to take the day off and asked them to make up the time when orders pick up again once the snow has cleared. I can work from home so I've been getting on with it and hoping we can be back up to full service tomorrow.
Unless you run an emergency service or have customers queuing at your door, I think people who expect their staff to kill themselves to get into work for two days in a decade need to take a reality check.

As much as I hate Winter, when a load of snow arrives it doesn't bother me in the slightest. I learned to drive in it, I've lived in areas with high snow levels too, and it's this time of year when having a Land Rover really comes into its own, especially round here where the roads haven't been cleared.

Mind you, I would rather be in Barbados right now supping a nice cold juice drink on the beach at Sandy Lane bay. Never mind, maybe one day if I get the right six numbers on a Saturday evening ;)

I like the honesty of that skiweardale.com website.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT THE ROAD UP TO THE CAR PARK WITHOUT CHAINS OR A 4X4 YOU WILL NOT MAKE IT

The "YOU WILL NOT MAKE IT" sounds like the Terminator will kill you if you even try it.

I've never seen a business advertising a life or death situation as you approach their business.

Nice one guys.

As this kind of wheather is normal for me here, I can give you some advice:
1. Keep your windscreen wipers up when not driving, otherwise they stick to windscreen and you just break them when scraping off.
2. Try do to everything, so your heating doesnt shut down. If it gets frosty, water will freeze and pipes will crack, so you will have no heating for a LONG time because all plumbers will be busy. And it will cost you a furtune, specially if your pipes are under floor/behind walls. You will just flood your house when temperature gets back to normal.
3. When you start at traffic lights, dont use 1st gear.
4. Clear the snow off your house/shed/shelter roof. Depending how much is there, it can get too heavy and your roof can break in.
5. Drain the water from your cars cooling system and put antifreeze(cheap). If you have water, then it will freeze and engine/radiator will crack. No warranty will cover it, just your wallet....

Good luck :)

we have had about an inch of snow in shrewsbury all winter ,some schools have closed in town WHY all the roads are clear and its melting fast yet no traffic out and about for once.

Apart from last night Chris that was quite a nice snowfall.
Although main road are clear we've got our offices down in Monkmoor Industrial park and down those and the side roads it's completley icy i.e just even touching your brakes kick off the ABS in the car.

I ordered a washing machine from Comet last week, delivery due tomorrow. Had a phone call earlier from them saying they cant deliver due to adverse weather conditions. I ordered on line and they told me where it was being delivered from, I challenged the caller as to its whereabouts and it was a dist. centre at the Severn Bridge, as far as I'm concerned I told them that the main roads and M4 is clear with care, clear public transport are running and other companies are out delivering and its not that adverse from Severn bridge to cardiff, I got out at 6.30 this morning and I'm not having that excuse. He said, thats all I've been told and will have to rearrange delivery date. I dont know, why cant people be honest, if you dont want to do it just say so and I will find someone who will.

what job is it you do from home, as i am looking for a flexible job that enables me to work from home:), could you please PM me!

I am self employed doing all things that I enjoy

I do marketing for a local restaurant (content and design for flyers, posters, marketing ideas, website content, creating cyber networks and so on)

I mainly though write articles for websites
(see my website link below) and I've just been recruited recently to draw some cartoons

I am also about to start making jewellery

What else? There must be somat else? ;)

I'll be straight up with you.

Not everyone could do what I do. I have an idea and can make into money quite quickly. I go a little crazy making things happen. Unless you have the energy and the lunacy to operate this way, it'll be an uphill climb.

What are your talents?

QUOTE
The 36 Engineer Regiment, based at Invicta Barracks in Maidstone, have been called in to drive six Land Rovers to help Kent County Council deliver its meals on wheels to elderly people in remote parts of the county.

Oh great the cats looking mighty relieved.:)

The quads are all down the shop,The lads have offered to get me supplies if needed.

The 4 x 4 models really are the best thing for snow next to a snowmobile.

I have been told that on the outskirts of Warrington there are several large landrovers/tractors that are being used to make sure a slight incline of some 80 yards is passable by dragging cars/vans/essentials and even buses up it ... they literally will drag you up the small hill to make sure traffic is moving as its the only way some can get access to essentials.

... and for those who met up at the Swan at Winwick from off here a summer or two ago, they will know the incline I am talking about!

Just been nicely reassured onthe news that the government says we won't run out of gas and new supplies of salt and grit are on the way from abroad....

Hang on a minute, what happened to North Sea Gas? We're an island surrounded by sand and sea salt, WTF are we importing this stuff?

What about the billiions of tons of coal this island has... oh yeah the last lot closed the the mines too.

..and people wonder why i struggle to decide which lot to vote for in an election.

Never mind let's stick up a few windmills, that'll solve things. Hmmmmm maybe they should link it up to the houses of parlaiment, plenty of hot air in there.
