SEO, the conmans dream,...

Just posted this as a response to another thread, but thought it worth sharing;

Well, my 2pence worth is that the price you pay is what the SEO's reckon they can get away with - the truth, in my opinion, is that SEO is just a load of smoke and mirrors, there are some basic truths that can be gleaned from 'SEO for Dummies' the rest is, shall we say, supposition?!

Nobody except Google knows how to achieve great rankings quickly, so, again, in my opinion, if any SEO says they KNOW the answer, they are being a bit naive. Over the last few years, Google has used loads of algorythm and filter changes that have led to unpredictable search engine results altering the positions of many sites seemingly with no rhyme or reason.

The following is an excerpt from an email I got from Perry Marshall (PPC Guru)

One of the funniest movies I ever saw was "Tin Men"
with Richard Dreyfuss and Danny DeVito. It's about
guys who sell aluminum siding.

Tin Man = Con Man. Gotta love a movie about
con men, eh?

There's a scene where two salesmen are in front of this
lady's house with a camera on a tripod. She comes
out and asks them what they're doing.

"Oh, hello Ma'am. We're taking a picture your home."

"For what?"

"A magazine article. It's a before / after feature. We're
illustrating the benefits of brand new aluminum siding."

"What are you using my home for?"

"Ma'am, your home is the 'before' picture." And he
continues taking photographs.

She begins to show concern. "Oh, OK... well... would it be
possible for my home to be the AFTER picture instead?"

He furrows his brow. "Well, uh, yes, I suppose...." and
eventually he levitates 5 Grand out of her wallet and
she's the proud owner of brand new aluminum siding.

So I'm thinking, maybe somebody could shoot a movie
called "SEO Men" - guys who charge you not 5 Grand
but more like 5 Grand a MONTH to, well.... fiddle with
your website and [hopefully] get you some kind of #1
ranking six or twelve months from now.

Oh, the list of cons people get away with in SEO is long
indeed:

-Your site gets banned. "Sorry, you're banned from
Google's Index." Oooops.... Hey, how much is it gonna
cost you to start all over with a new website and new
domain name? I bet those same guys ain't gonna help
you do that, are they?

-They tell you which 6 keywords they're going to rank you
for. BUT ---- do they know whether those keywords bring
BUYERS rather than just tire kickers? If they're not
benchmarking their work with real conversion data, don't
believe 'em.

-"Pay us and we'll submit your site to the Search Engines."
(Dude, if search engines search, and if your site is find-able,
the engines should find your site on their own.)

-Submission to meaningless directories - Placement on
most directories with a link to your site is like my 3 year
old boy saying 'look at him, he's the man.' Yeah, the 3
year old is cute and all but he's got no street cred. Only
a handful of directories really matter.

-On Site SEO vs. Off Site SEO: You can optimize the
pages inside your site but 80% of the difference comes
from what OTHER sites do and say about you. That's
the hard work. Most SEO companies don't do the hard
stuff.

-Google actually uses different criteria to evaluate
different market segments and keywords. What works
for SEO in a health topic is different from what works
when you're selling computer parts - Google treats
those segments differently. This element must be
evaluated before work is begun.

-"You have to show up on the first page of your
generic keyword" - but if that keyword doesn't
convert visitors to buyers, you're up a creek
without a paddle.

-Designing websites and doing SEO for the bots,
not the people: Big Mistake. Big. Huge. Because
bots don't buy anything, people do.

-Business Strategy; Strategic Copywriting; Testing,
Tracking and Traffic Generation - 5 different disciplines,
ALL are necessary for truly effective SEO. They must
be done in tandem.

-The Search Continuum: Glenn Livingston's discovery
that people who type in different keywords are at
dramatically different stages of the buying process.
The pages they land on need to reflect where they are
right now.

-Failure to apply the 80/20 principle in SEO. Most
people do SEO on the "Long Tail" stuff which generates
meager results. It's the 20% of effort ("Short Spike")
that produces 80% of the results that matters.

-Knowing what words need to show up on the page in
what order, with proper internal text linking methods

-Most guys think in terms of words and phrases. But
people have conversations. Real SEO is about real
conversations.

70-80% of SEO guys are incompetent and 5-10% are
Con Men. The few that remain are hard to hire because
they have a backlog of work from successful clients who
want more.

What it takes to get to the top of Google is well documented - it's no secret.

Breaking it down to it's most basic level,

1) Well optimised search engine friendly site
2) Great incoming links

Any idiot can optimise a sites pages, it's just a case of identifying the correct keywords, breaking these down into a logical hierarchy and then using Title, description, heading tags, and the body tags to include your keyphrases.

#2 is where you pay good money for an SEO who earns their crust ;)

It's only bad SEOs that use smorke and mirrors to make it seem like their bodge job is better than it is.

Earl, it'd be a pretty short blog;

Stop getting yourself ripped off and follow the basic rules in SEO for dummies;

http://www.amazon.com/Search-Engine-Optimization-Dummies-Peter/dp/0764567586

End of blog. done.

As I said, the SEO basics are easy and can be done by anyone. It's things like link building, social media marketing and link bailting where an SEO is worth paying for. It's a question of time Vs money for most of the simple tasks though.

Having said that, any idiot can do PPC ;)

am not really interested in mudslinging about PPC, this discussion is about how upset I get when business owners tell me they have signed up for a service which gives them no visibility, no forecasts for ROI and no comeback when they ultimately fail.

Well that's bad SEOs for you. I guess they should have done their reserach. SEO done well has jues as much transparency as PCC but ultimately more traffic.

I guess it's down to what your individual goals are. PPC is great for short term promotions, offers, recruitment etc. For longer term aims then SEO is more cost effective. We do both so I can see the befefits of each.

Again, this doesn't stack up - sorry for being dogged here, but are you telling me that you can achieve page1 position1 on Google, using SEO and guarantee that position on a spread of over 1000 keywords?

I'm sorry, but SEO is a highly limited service and should not be relied on for any length of time let alone long term.

agree yet again problem is that so many web design companies and marketeers are setting themselves up as SEO's and as you say ripping the public off with false promises and outrageous claims.

Not good for us Honest snake skin salesmen who will tell a person if there investment or business idea is worth spending on .In our opinion of course ,but having been knocking about for a good few years one aquires the ability to do the sums and investigate the possibilities.

Clients getting the short end of the stick has nothing to do with the SEO industry - that's just bad business practice on the part of the supplier and is rife in many other industries.

And FYI for the future - ignorant, uninformed opinions aren't really worth cross posting on multiple threads, nor is SEO bashing for the sake of it.

Yes, I run a SEO campaign for a large site, targeting over 150,000 keywords of which ~75% are top 10 rankings (Google.com) and ~45% are number 1 (Google.com). I achieve, but don't guarentee - that's transparency of service and managing expectations, not snake oil.

We are not talking about other industries, we're talking about the SEO industry.

*yawn* as much as you like, the truth remains, there are loads of charlatans ripping companies off with high prices for little work

And I'm hardly SEO bashing for the sake of it - am bashing it because I'm sick of hearing the liea and crap spoken about.

No **** sherlock! There are also a lot of double glazing companies that do bad jobs and plumbers that are awful.

Does that mean you have no windows or toilets in your house?

As a consumer it's simply a requirement to research the market and gain testamonials as you would as you would in any other service industry.

But who's to say thise keywords wouldnt have achieved those positions anayway - you dont that's for sure - unless you have a direct line to Mr Google?

Uninformed and ignorant? You need to take good hard look at yourself

No, I'm guessing you're bashing SEOs to turn people off of SEO and onto your conveniently placed PPC company. You might be a little more credible if it wasn't for your job ;)

But mattsaw - my point is - why should I pay a plumber £5k for doing a £500 job - just because he makes up a load of stuff he needs to do? I don't think so

With respect mattsaw - that really isn't my intention - we are sitting quite happily with the clients we have, it really is in reaction to several conversations I've had recently

I'm not sure what I think of this post - I guess it's only natural for PPC people to down SEO and vice versa. There are conmen in all trades, that's nothing new really and I guess in time most will get caught out but in the mean time there are plenty of people willing to be fooled by these cons.

as for:
Nobody except Google knows how to achieve great rankings quickly, so, again, in my opinion, if any SEO says they KNOW the answer, they are being a bit naive.
I think that's not quite true, there are techniques to manipulate search engines to rank you higher which lets face it that's what SEO is (Mattsaw said it well) and there are bad techniques of course as well. We now feature in the top 3 places for all our major regional keywords with the exception of only 1 and that's only taken 2 months with careful attention to our site's on site content - all of it above board I may add.

I know where we were beforehand and then what we did and I've seen the results we've got - so ipso facto I know how to get up there but it's not a 100% knowledge nor is it something we shout about and we can now in fact switch off some of our google adwords campaigns and save money. If someone asked us to do SEO we would look at what they wanted before deciding if it was for us to undertake and yes clients could do it themselves I guess but they are paying for the privilege of having someone do it for them (and not at stupid crazy rates I may add)

So whilst It's not rocket science many make it sound it :)

Oh come on Scott SEO has a terrible reputation, and is full of companies that will rip there granny off for a bob or two.

IMO there are no more than a dozen quality SEO's in the UK.

So how comes there are thousands of SEO companies.:D

Thankyou creospace - a sensible contribution at last,

As I said, there are some basic truths that help get your site in Googles good books, but how that could cost a company £5k month in month out baffles me.

Exactly my point - there are bad plumbers and good plumbers, £500 jobs and £5000 jobs - but you've still got a toilet right? It's simply moronic to discount an entire industry because (as with most industries) there are some bad tradesmen.

quick question... is SEO something that might be regulated in the future? or even require training and accreditation?

Take my industry for example, personal training and fitness... it was hugely unregulated and dominated by unqualified cowboys telling people what to do in order to lose weight and get fit. Nowadays personal trainers need to be registered and fully qualified before they can go near a client.

Yes certainly, there are already moves towards this through SEMPO and to a lesser extent SMA-UK. There still needs to be a formal accreditation to be finalised though.

A potential client can take steps on their own though to ensure that they are getting the service that they expect, simply by doing some resaerch so they understand the process (it's really not that hard to understand) and to request 5-6 contact numbers of existing clients to talk to.

.

Can't see this happening Matt .Can you imagine a top SEO having to divuldge all the little tricks he has learnt into the public domain.

Not going to happen. What well may be is a spate of so called acreditation agencies all charging a nice fee to enable SEO's to say they are Honourable members and put a little sticker on there site to prove it.

So instead of cleaning up SEO one ends up with a fresh spate of scammers as has happened in so many other trades.

I can see it being results based rather than methods therefore avoiding the neccessity of having the go into the actual process.

SEMPO already charge a membership fee that is more than worthwhile. I'd have no hesitation in having someone like that organise things.

Rob, you and Perry Marshal are undoubtedly biased against SEO.

Yes, a good percentage of people offering SEO are crap.
But a very similar percentage of people offering PPC management services are crap too. I know, I 've used a few.
A good percentage of "web designers" are crap too.

Just because some people providing the service are crap, doesn't mean it's not a worthwhile service. So it's ridiculouse to write off the entire industry/practise.

I pay for both PPC and SEO. I'm very happy with the return I get from both of them - and trust me, I measure them both very closely.

- Brilliant! Well observed. Most of the world still thinks you still need to 'submit!' and theres the problem with SEO for your average Joe Bloggs - ignorance.

Agreed submission services are a waste of time and a legacy from another era of web marketing, but it would be wrong to assume that it is as easy as "search engines finding your site on their own".

Just because a SE can find 1 page of your site, doesn't necessarily mean that they will find other pages. And even if they do, it doesn't mean those pages have what it takes to rank well. And even if they do it doesn't mean that those pages will rank well.

As websites scale upwards, it becomes a much more complex process to SEO them. Small bugs in how content is presented (which may seem insignifcant to end users or web developers) can cause indexing and ranking problems (and in some cases, penalties).

And I don't think it's fair to blame SEOs for the state of the industry - yeh, the cowboys should take a lot of the blame, but the DIY / "SEO is easy" crowd aren't without blame. When I worked with a large agency, the jobs I had to "fix" SEO work were split evenly between poor "professional" work and poor DIY / amatuer work.

Re: standardisation, etc - I agree something needs to be done, but to be honest I think it's more down to how SEO is sold than the actual services themselves. Clients need to have the risks outlined at the outset of campaigns. If a spam technique carries a risk - that isn't a poor service to provide - it's a poor service to sell if you don't outline the risks.

this debate can go on for ever, however here's a point I make over and over again the steps to effectivly optimising a site on basic level are easy page titles, meta tags, keywords etc.

What you get from a SEO consultant is experience and expertise, for instance i can write a limited amount of html being a Internet marketing & SEO consultant I have to know these things. However just because i can write html and use photoshop doesn't qualify me to build my clients websites. same as i know in theory know how to build brick and mortar wall however i recon if i attempted it id end up with wall but it might not be that pretty.
