In the past few days we have seen our rankings for a specific keyword drop, we are doing everything right following good SEO practice..

As a web design company for estate agents, every time we launch a new site we have a link at the bottom of the footer that points to our website. I was just wondering if this would have any SEO implications as the anchor text is our main target keyword.

1. There has been a bit of fluctuation in the SERPs the last few days with speculation that there has been a Google Algorithm update.

2. Keyword Anchor Sitewide Footer link is asking for a penalty or a Penguin smackdown, I'd remove the ones you can for a branded No=follow link to be safe.

If you were doing everything right your ranking wouldn't drop. Or maybe your competitors are doing it better.

The implications are that link is only there to promote your business. Which means Google probably ignores it. Or possibly even gives you a slight penalty.

That being said, I can see loads of things need fixing on the site.

Lots of reported Google algo updates since the start of this month, maybe you're just seeing a shift in natural rank. Try this tool, you can sometimes identify a direct relationship to algo update vs. traffic/rank https://barracuda.digital/panguin-seo-tool/

You have over 300'000 backlinks from dunloprealty.bm? low trust site.

Maybe some new competition has been introduced?
Make sure you don't have any site penalties in webmaster tools etc.

Footer link is ok but make it no follow.

Thanks for the useful comments so far! We have begun extensive work on the website to improve it, what would you say is the main thing that needs fixing on the website in terms of SEO?

We do and we are working on that, just thought it would be good to get another opinion too :)

Join UKBF as a full member and get a website review. There are loads of things you could do - not just improve for SEO (which is dire on some of the pages I looked at).

"Oh yes, we are trying stuff, but it's not working - so please can you experts give us some free advice and then we can charge our clients for it?"

I'm afraid the world is full of SEO professionals that are winging it every day; sadly, it's the clients that are paying for their incompetence. Works great for me, I make a living out of fixing problems caused by bad agencies!

Almost think long term. The search results are regularly in flux - but the main things are the number of conversions / sales / leads your site generates per day, if those are falling you should rethink.

Try and move to a 90 day view rather than freaking out about day to day - is traffic growing over that time period, are your rankings in total improving etc.

I've been in this area since almost the beginning of the internet (OMG!) and updates come and go as others have said.
