Selling your art/craft work - do you?

I know there are several people on here who are artistic:-

to name a but few.

The question is do any of you make any money from your art work, or do you do it more for pleasure and use any sales to just cover expenses.

My problem is I am loath to sell it, once I have spent ages working on something. I am ok if someone has supplied the item they want revamping, but hate letting go of the things I have bought. I buy for me, which is all wrong.

I ask because I was browsing a local craft shop, in a touristy spot, and the prices were eye watering; I cannot imagine who has that sort of money to spend; 1 cushion (not hand finished) 30cms - 30cms £75.00, the matching chair throw was £195.00 - ouch!
Wooden spoons (mixing spoon size) with either a proverb or a name carved into them £29.00.

Do people pay those prices because of the shops location, and they think they are getting something special.
They sure do not pay anything like that at craft fairs, they seem to object to paying anything at all

We are a wholesale business and until the credit crunch had a healthy turnover and lifestyle.

I don't consider our work art or craft ... we make a protoype then work out the feasibility then adjust accordingly ... I'm not precious about anything I do ... it's just stuff x

If I do some crafts I would rather make money out of it. Craft festivals and craft fairs are among the perfect place to introduce or sell products to prospect customers.

I'd love to do the craft fairs again - always good fun and nearly always good money.

There is an interesting project in our high street - a collective of a few dozen local crafters / artists got together and opened up a shop taking turns to staff it etc.

Still going strong after a few years and does very well by all accounts. Used to have my stuff in there.

That is a fab idea

I had a gallery showing in Paris a while back and sold a few images for a huge % more then what I would normally purley for the backing of location/gallery it was in.

Can help quite a bit location

I have always felt that is a really good idea; I ran it past someone only the other day, sadly they did not seem to see the benefit

You can all share the costs, if one pulls out or is not doing well, its not down to to anyone person to cover their costs, and it attracts far more buyers because of the diverse things for sale.

I think it is a brill format.

I'm involved with the management of a non-profit sports club and we have held 2 craft fairs in the past 6 months and they have been a great success, the feedback we got was that most of the traders had a worthwhile day financially.

Carlisle area; but I did once live near Barrow, Rampside/Roa Island, loved it.
I miss that part of Cumbria, especially as I like wildlife, a packed lunch, pair of bins and a day on Foulney with the tide in - bliss!
As for Peel Island what a gem
