Self Assesment Tax Bill

I use a accountant who does my VAT and Tax.

He sent me a letter back in September telling me what my tax payments would be this year and that payment instructions should be issued on the due dates.

I do not normally pay a bill until it arrives in the post or email. VAT payments are taken automatically but Tax payments are not.

I did not get any bills or payment instructions for my self assessment tax bill before it was due, but have also not had any bills or reminders through the post stating it is overdue either and now think I have been charged interest for a late payment as a result.

Do HMRC send a paper bill with payment instructions through the post or by email for this, or should I be setting up a reminder myself to pay this twice a year?

They do send paper reminders. Occasionally.
One year I had one reminder, another year I had a dozen.

In days of old you used to get several paper reminders and statements but HMRC dont send them now.

I always advise clients to make a note of the due dates to avoid interest charges.

Are you aware that you can defer some tax payments at present?

I did not have access to view the online system myself, so have not been able to view anything online either. Just after posting this the code arrived in the post to allow me access to the online system. I have found a page which says:

"You do not need to tell HMRC that you are deferring your second Self Assessment payment on account for tax year 2019 to 2020."

The whole system looks a bit of a mess and all over the place though. It looks like there are two systems combined. An older one (linked from About You and some other pages) and a newer one.

The first payment that is overdue. Fortunately the interest is not too much unless I get charged any extra penalties or fines for a late payment.

However I think I have enough to get by, so will make the second payment on time to make sure I do not spend it on anything else. It is possible my income/profit for the next financial year will be below £12,500.

I don't think HMRC online account shows information very clearly.

The deferral for Self Assessment is indeed for the second installment but I quite understand what you mean about paying now so that you don't spend it. I have a feeling a few will.

Make sure your accountant knows your income is expected to fall - you can ask for payments on account to be reduced.
