I play FPS games like CoD, MoH etc and have a 49" ultrawide 5120 * 1440 monitor.

I skimped on the graphics card when I built my PC a few years ago and need (want) to get something a bit modern.

Should I get the 5060 16gb to protect me from the growing needs of games (and make multimedia management easier) or the raw power of a 5070 which is 12gb, to get better gaming bang for the buck?

This isn't a definitive one or the other answer because the 5070 will have a bit more processing power, but the 5060 will be better for graphic rich environments because of the extra VRAM.
I think the 5070 will be better suited in a COD environment (it's what I run) but I do suffer in very graphically heavy games, such as Star Citizen which needs more VRAM to process higher texture environments.

Given the choice, as I did, I'd go with the 5070 though.

    Thanks for the pointer.

I think that I will see if there are any deals (unlikely) on 5070TI's - the extra RAM on these may future proof things for a year or two more!

It's the 5070 ti that I use, but wish I'd gone the extra 5080 or even 5090 as AI engines don't run natively on the 5070 chipset, and I'm building bespoke AI bots and am having to use an older 3080ti to run them.
As much as I enjoy some COD, I'm enjoying building my own LLM AI engines as a pet project. If Skynet launches from Northampton, sorry!

AI isn't on my horizon, just some better gaming (sadly not the latest COD - no single player), but the budget definitely will not stretch near the 4 figures that the 5080/90's command!!!

Id agree with the 5070 but still horrified the VRAM on that 5070 is so low... Also alternative is the AMD line up 9070XT has 16GB VRM and around the same price as the 5070
