I have spent the last 2 days with several more to go checking all of our site images (over 20000 products). Why ? because Google shopping have decreed that our images do not meet their high standards. Nothing to do with image quality of course, they flagged up 3 images of boilers that had a flash in the corner saying 7 year guarantee. They didn't stop to think that these are manufacturers images and by amending them we are in violation of our image rights agreement. The email goes on to state that no promotional or other material can be shown on images so no line drawings to show scale, no guarantees and so on, all useful customer information but the Big G reckons they detract from the shopping experience. I wonder if they do any research on these things or is it just something that is pulled out of thin air over a coffee break ?
They now also say that nothing that isn't part of the offer can be shown so that puts paid to a bath or shower enclosure being shown in a nice bathroom setting or a tap being shown attached to a basin...Madness, there is no way this detracts from the shopping experience, in fact I think it enhances it.
Google are too big and too powerful now and they make merchants jump through hoops for no good reason. Google product ads are a paid advertising medium and as such we should be able to advertise as we think fit, within reason of course.
So, I know that employees of Google look on this forum from time to time so can I have an answer to just 1 question, What detracts from the shopping experience more, a flash that shows a 7 year guarantee, or the fact that when prices are listed low to high on Google shopping, the lowest prices are often not shown in the results but hidden behind a "compare prices from xxx shops" link and the lowest price is not clearly visible until this is done.
Google tend to shout a lot about rules being bent but they themselves are by far the biggest offenders.
Friday rant over, have a nice weekend.
