Question about self employed

I have been working for a company for about a year in construction as CIS selfemployed and was getting paid regularly 50 hours a week now due to cost of living crisis the company started paying less hours like they call us on the job when we about to start they give some reason that weather is not good or crane is in service etc and are paying very less hours so this is my full time income and bread and butter for my family I am also affected to the cost of living so I went to the manager to discuss the issue he said to me that I am self employed and have zero hour contract with them which is a news to me as I am working long time never heard about this and asked me that if m not happy I should leave I felt humiliation coz I gave my blood and sweat for the company'sprogress any advice on this matter

Can I do something about I mean I can easily look but I feel I can be the voice for many other working on that job who are scared to speak Cis contractors zero hours I have heard it first time so not really sure about this can I take legal action about this

Being offered fewer hours? no.
Being CIS self employed and not knowing? Did you receive payslips?

I felt humiliated the way that manager spoke to me was not right and I know many other worker in same place who are going through the same thing I think this company is taking advantage of the situation and I believe this is not right it’s my thoughts any way I may be wrong don’t know

Just my opinion than this self employment thing should stop because the way these company treating the workers Its like modern day slavery I wish I could make a difference but I am just a number and can be deleted easily what a selfish place this world has become thanks it was nice Atleast u took some effort to hear me out

You can't be on a zero hour contract if you are self employed.

If you are genuinely self employed you can look for other work and you can also look to renegotiate your terms.

If you should be an employee you can report your employer and potentially get some redress there. Its unlikely that you will retain your position in that case.

Either way I would look for other work.

I will look for other work definitely but this practice is not right in my opinion it’s like modern day slavery I was selfemployed my self but realised on Friday the way that manager talked to me I felt humiliated and there are more workers like me there who’s going through the same thing and are scared to speak coz they want a regular income to meet the needs and these company taking advantage of the situation

Whilst I sympathise with your situation you can't equate this to slavery unless there is something you haven't told us. You can choose to walk away from this.

Decent construction workers are always in demand. Ask around, put your name out to agencies, look at LinkedIn/ indeed etc. You have choices here.

Try to move away from the negative thoughts of your current situation and look towards more positive solutions. Wish you all the best.

As self employed in the construction industry you need to complete a tax return. Some of the tax you have paid should be refunded.

Self employed should mean just that you work for yourself. You do not have a job. You find your own work, set your own rates, can send someone else if you decide to, set your own hours. You don't get holiday pay or sick pay.

It sounds like you really want an employer / employee type job.

It’s not about my thought I am always positive but as a human being cannot stand for what is wrong I was just trying to make a little difference if can for other who are in same position and ignoring the issue makes them more powerful u know they should know that somebody out there can fight I know I cannot win this as people in this world have the habit of dealing with lies and deception nobody is bothered about the thruth . The person dares to speak the thruth get eliminated in my case it’s me I dared to raise my voice and got terminated any way it’s life . If you receive payslips with tax and NI deducted you are not self employed.

If you were self employed you would be responsible for paying your own tax.

It’s not modern slavery (because you are getting paid a wage).

You feel hard done by because the company is following the conditions set out in your contact of employment. If you want more money find another job.

He appears to be a sub contractor on CIS so should get a document showing CIS deductions.
Even if he is an employee he has not worked for the employer for 2 years so has no legal redress.
