Problem loading a new software using XP Pro 64 bit

Been trying to load a family historian program and get message
internal error :failed to expand shell folder constant "userdocs"

Should be loading to c:\\program files (x86) \ family historian

Also get the same issue trying on windows 10 home

is this likely to be a firewall problem

Have switched off anti virus

Have tried to load to c:\ family historian as well but same result

Any suggestions welcome, FH is well established commercial software so don't expect problem with it more likely something on windows

The problem isn't unique to the software you are installing, a Google search for "internal error :failed to expand shell folder constant "userdocs"" brings up a load of possibilities.

According to links above a solution is using command

net use\\ <computerusername>\<sharename>\<user:<username>

Where are computerusername and sharename located?

Presume as only user and administrator my name is computerusername

computer username is the user you are logging into windows as.
look under c:\users

If you are still using Windows XP then you really need to get rid of that ASAP as it is end of life and no longer support and a big security issue. The only way you can safely continue to use Windows XP is if the computer is not connected to the Internet. You would be better off installing Linux Mint than continuing to use XP.

Thanks for that, this computer is only a home one so no problem if it gets in through the anti-virus, much of the software will not work on windows 10 so will change when we get a new computer

Probably the original my documents folder was accidentally dragged and dropped inside another folder, or was deleted. The registry still points to the original my documents folder, so the installer can't locate it. More details here -

You need to restore the original my documents folder, or edit the registry to point to the new one.
NOTE. You should back up the machine image before making changes to the registry.

That is a network sharing command connecting your computer to a folder on another computer.
I doubt this is your solution, unless you're installing a multi user networked version....

For information:
Your computerusername can be found in control panel under system, if I remember correctly.
sharename would be a folder that's shared across the network.
username is the user you're logged in as and is authorised to connect to the shared folder.

Typing "set" in a commandline window will show you all the environment variables which should tell you where the system thinks your "my documents" (probably listed as appdata or similar) is, your computer name, your username and more.
