I think Johnson will have left the House believing that he has won. The Covid annoucement went well, even if there should have been more people pointing out that it is too serious an issue just to be decided because Johnson needs to look good. But for most people that one good piece cannout outwiegh the harm he has caused.

I think David Davis 'question' was very good but he was a little emotional about it and many in the House will not have heard exactly what he was saying. They won't be able to miss it on the news, though.

Boris doesn't do decisive. He bends with the wind and navigates a path that best suits him.

He also says a lot of things but nobody knows how much truth lies within each statement.

“It’s one thing if it’s a minor incursion, and then we end up having a fight about what to do and not do,” he said. “But if they actually do what they’re capable of doing with the force amassed on the border, it is going to be a disaster for Russia.”

When he was first asked about the Ukraine crisis, Mr Biden said: "He (Mr Putin) has never seen sanctions like the ones I've promised if he moves (into Ukraine)."

So the USA will do nothing if it's minor, and sanctions (like not buying gas) if they invade properly.

Europe needs Russian gas to get through the winter. There is enough LNG in the world to supply Europe, but there aren't enough ships to get it here or ports for them to unload. That's ignoring the financial cost.

This leaves the EU to "fight" alone, in the dark as rolling power cuts sweep across Europe.

My post was specifically in reference to another posters comment.

...but it gives the EU/NATO a problem.

If they let Russia invade Ukraine, the thinking is that they'll get bogged down in a long war, with no end. Ukraine have a large army, they're prepared to put up a fight, which could leave Russia fighting a conflict that doesn't really have any benefit, as it will take too long to win. That's why they want to leave it all alone and stay out of it, let Russia get stuck in the mud and distracted for a decade.

If NATO don't support Ukraine though, it looks horrendous internationally and may lead China to make a move in the South China Sea.

Also, I think the US is worried. If they start sending troops and equipment to Ukraine, China could just decide to advance anyway, leaving the US short.

The US is no longer able to fight on two fronts. It doesn't have the capability. It could not defend against both China and Russia across two zones. The China/Russia alliance is dangerous, nobody really knows what they're planning. Maybe Ukraine is a distraction and cover for China? Maybe they want to drag the US/EU in to a conflict on the border and absorb almost all of the military capability, allowing China to advance and take control of the South China Sea unchallenged.

I suppose another reason why a mild winter won’t be helpful to our friend Vlad is that nobody will need quite as much gas!
