I used No Missed Calls. It does the job nicely.
People phone, they say the designer / developer is not about and they email me a message which comes to my phone and they can be called back pretty much instantly
The number can be taken too!

It is a simple as that is all I need. I think it is £1 per call (not including sales calls).
It depends on your call volume, they do have services which have a set monthly rate which may work out cheaper if you have loads of calls. I don't personally get many

Answer.co.uk runs on a PAYG model, costing £1 per call with no setup fee or contract. Am happy to give you a call to go over this if you need.
In regards to taking your number with you, it depends on the type of number you access. An 02/local number is quite difficult to port as most answering services are not numbers suppliers. I would always recommend renting the number externally allowing you more control and freedom of which company you use. Again, can help you with this as we have a number of suppliers we use (and we can also provide numbers if needed).

I have been happy with answer.co.uk, I don't get many inbound calls but it's nice to know they're there to pick up when I can't. I bounce my divert number to them if it's engaged or I don't answer within 20 seconds. And they're 24x7 too if that makes any difference.

I also highly, no, massively, recommend JAM Telephone Answering and http://answer.co.uk/ their customers service is second to none.
So well priced and as a one man band a huge time saver as I can't be doing everything, eg: out, in meetings, answering the phone, working etc etc.
I've been using them for over a year and can't say a bad word about them.
100% recommend them.

I've been using a company called Time Assistant since starting.
Guys are really good, and don't just take my calls, they also deal with booking candidates onto courses and taking payments for me.
I have 3 people who 'work for me' on my calls so the candidates, venue hires etc always speak to the same people, this was what I really wanted as continuity is essential.
They also provide my mailing address and various other ad hoc admin services, but that is outwith my call charges.
My bills are generally always the same as they have packages so I know from month to month what I'm spending, I stayed away from the PAYG option but I can see how that would work for businesses.

Hmm, thought I'd ring Capital Call Centre as their prices seem good and my call diverted to a mobile and was answered "Hello".
So that's why they're cheap...

The number on capital's site is goes to the sales guy there, if hes out and about it goes through to his mobile. There call centre service is very good and is why i got involved with them. But each to there own, many of the other companies are good aswell, but normally a little more costly.
Bit of an unfair judgement there though.

You will be allocated a dedicated phone number which will present your company name on our switchboard so we know exactly who were dealing with. You can simply divert your own number to this number at your convenience or advertise it as your own company number. All calls are answered within 3 rings and a concise message forwarded to you by email.
The standard service is Monday to Friday 9am-6pm although 24/7 cover is available (see additional costs). Both the annual and quarterly services are payable upfront and your call charges (if you are not paying for an inclusive package) are billed monthly in arrears. You will be provided with a spreadsheet of all your calls for the previous month with your invoice for reconciliation.
