Ortho-K lenses. Anyone tried them?

I've just started wearing Ortho-K lenses on Wednesday. I've been wearing glasses and contacts for 21 years now, and I've looked at laser treatment etc but just couldn't reconcile the failure rate to the price!

My sister in law started on ortho-k about 4 months ago and the results have been good, so I thought I'd give them a go.

Basically, they are contact lenses which you sleep in. Then you take them out in the morning, and they have "corrected" your vision overnight. Some people get to the point where they can get away with wearing the lenses every couple of days.

I've had two nights in them now, and I'm so impressed. I have a bit of double vision in one eye, but this will have corrected itself by Monday. When I get up, I can actually see almost perfectly. In fact my prescription is -3.00 in both eyes, and after the first night (when you go back to the optician for a health check) my eyes were at L -1.00 and R -0.50. There are many people not wearing specs that have eyesight worse than this!

The actual lenses are a bit uncomfortable to wear at first - they're Gas Permeable and take a bit of getting used to, but already they're feeling much better.

Anyone else tried them?

I wear specs just for driving and TV, used to wear daily disposable contact lenses, then the can't-read-with-the-lenses-in thing started (age!) so gave up with them.
Went for a consultation for laser but was told my eyesight was too good and it wouldn't be worth it. Was annoyed at the time, but later appreciated their honesty, they could have just taken my £3k and done them anyway!
May investigate Ortho-K, they sound interesting...

Never heard of those before - an interesting concept. Personally, I find that glasses suit me, (thickish black prada frame ;)).

Just watching their feature on their website from 'This Morning' as I'm intrigued to know how they work!! :D

Cheers

Well, a bit of an update really. Had the lenses since Wednesday, so that's 4 sleeps, and today, I could see almost perfectly. Infact, I was fine to drive 30 miles and back to a meeting, so I'm really pleased.

I've still got 5 or 6 pairs of the daily disposables that my optician gave me as a backup.

OK, 6 weeks or so on, I thought I'd let you all know how things are.

Brilliant! I've had a couple of incidents where after one too many jars down the Feathers, I've forgotten to put them in, and night driving is still a little bit awkward, but apart from that, everything's grand.

I'd certainly recommend them for anyone looking at alternatives to glasses and contact lenses.

There's not a lot offering them at the minute. Apparently because the "chair time" is so high at the beginning. They get their money back on your monthly fees of course, but it doesn't seem to suit the national chains. Mostly seems to be independent opticians that are offering it. TBH I think they're better anyway!
