No reading on gas meter

Hi all, a few months ago our energy supplier replaced a faulty gas meter and when I went to take a reading last week, the display was blank. I called the supplier and they said it needed "waking up" so I pressed some buttons and the display came on but the reading was zero. It seems to be working since and the units are increasing daily.

The supplier is still looking into the issue, but I was wondering where I stand regarding the last few months usage? Gas has been consumed but not really sure how they would bill me for this in the absence of any readings?

It seems that when the meter was fitted, the engineer did not activate it or check it, unless it is a faulty meter?

Has anyone experienced anything like this before?

Can anyone offer any advice as to how to deal with this going forward please?

Thank you!

To the best of my knowledge, these utility meters with digital displays have also mechanical meters built in.

The utility company would turn up and open the meter up to perform a "manual reconciliation" of sorts.

This is correct, its not unusual for the digital display part to fail. but the supplier to still receive readings.

If it has not been working at all, they will take weekly readings and use those to estimate how much gas you would have used in previous weeks. Not perfect, but not far off.
