Hi, anyone know of a cheap way to get a new number for my business at home.

I have sky broadband and a BT line with sky subscription reserved for personal calls, also my Mrs has her own non Sky BT line for her business but I cant use her number.

so I need a 3rd number / solution. I would consider something that has a normal or free 08 .... number that goes straight to my mobile with no physical line or something internet based with a dedicated handset if it exists..

any ideas or examples? I want to to keep the cost low.

I use SIP/VOIP and from what youve said it would work for you.

You can get a FREE geographic number or 08 number. All you need is a SIP/VOIP handset. These can range from £5 to £100's depending on how complex you need it to be.

Another vote for Sipgate, or even Tesco Internet Phone is good, if they have a number that suits. They didnt have my local STD so i went with Sipgate and bought one of their phones. No line rental, just phone and PAYG credit.

You can also get free voicemail from Sipgate which you can have emailed to you in the form of a recording which you play through Windows Media Player or Real Player, etc.

Very handy!

Indeed! I am finding it Very handy - you could run without even a handset, publish phone number, take voicemails, ring back!

Depends how cheapskate you want to be. It's quite true you can get a free incoming geographic from sipgate, and you could make outgoing calls via a different service that would be free to landlines and 4.5p/min to mobiles. Have that set up for home.

But if this is for business then you must also consider reliability, CS for when it goes wrong, and what happens if your free provider goes bust or just ditches you as Skype did. Best bet is choose a VOIP supplier that is a member of ITSPA.

We do new phone lines, internet phones and o8 numbers. Have a look on my website or pm me if you would like some more details. Example of call costs with a new landline is 2.5p peak and 0.9p off peak. Rental is approx 45% cheaper than BT. Free global calls too.

Very good point. One way round that, as im doing is to buy an 0845/0870 number and direct it to your sipgate number. If for some strange reason they go bust, etc, simply redirect it somewhere else.

JUst thought you would like to know that our company has very good third party credibility with "Which" magazine, Daily Mail, and of course the FTSE250 were our shares have been one of the best shares to buy even in the recession. We do all the 08 numbers and you can buy a premium number if you like, but I do not think that is necessary as just having a 08 number give a message of a good business and possibly nationwide.
