Phew!!!

So, i posted last week on my 1st week of trading, well, week 2 is over!

the great news is that orders went up to 400% of last weeks level. Enquiries have rocketed! from 30 deliveries last night, i've another 12 orders this morning and hopefully about 25 will reorder for next week plus i'll get another 8-10 new orders before the weekend is out

I overstretched myself last night and crammed too many orders into too short a time - i must learn to say no or at least pace myself better. Anyway, only 1 customer was upset because i delivered 1 hour late - and that issue was resolved thanks to a nice bottle of red wine and a good heart to heart chat with the guy about the problems of starting a new business. At the end of it, the guy had his arm around me telling me to keep pushing on and not to worry - so i think i've made an friend after letting him down a bit!!

btw, it's a fruit and veg box business if you didn't see my last thread and are wondering!

tomorrow i'm interviewing my 1st employee (i've not given up my 9-5 job yet as i wanted to start things off before walking away from a good wage) and i've found a great guy - young, enthusiastic and a great attitude.

I've been offered a regular pitch in a local deli to sell my veg from - the deli gets great foot fall but doesn't sell fruit or veg and he wants to break into it and it gives my service a lot of exposure. I'm basically getting a free high street shop on a saturday!!

The best feeling is that this week is a BIG profit - Ok, it doesn't get near covering the start up expenses, but it's blown away the day to day costs!! And after a few months we'll see it being profitable based on this sort of performance

Having some volume has had a big effect too on my suppliers too - suddenly i'm not just a punter with an idea, i've spent some cash and they are impressed with my ideas - to the point they are trying to find ways to help generate more revenue/income for me. So that's nice to see suppliers who want to help a business/customer along.

by far the best thing is the sound of some of the customers who really appreciate the service. I have 1 customer who has had a double hip replacement and can't leave the house. the fact i basically bring her shopping to her - and i'll drop off her post, pick up any odds and ends for her has been a life saver for her. Some of the older customers too who miss an old fashioned green grocer service are great too. That brings a smile to my face

Anyway, this week was a shock, really busy, wasn't expecting it, 1st upset customer, bit of panic setting in and the knowledge that i've to do it all again starting NOW was quite daunting!!

i've also knocked some business back - we had a few enquiries from a little further afield that it makes sense to go to just now. We WILL get to them, but not yet. It'll do more harm than good to try it just now - but they accepted that and look forward to us being to in their area.

Still, we are getting there!

he hasn't placed a repeat order yet, and god knows what he is saying to everyone he knows!

29 happy customers, 1 unhappy one - who did I spend last night thinking about? :(

I have always had the opinion that everybody and every company can make a mess up, but only the good ones can sort it out to my satisfaction...... you dealt with this very well, and it looks to me like you will be successful, given that is your attitude.

Good luck with it all !!

Sounds like you are doing well and you have the customers - great news and well done. Am looking forward to the next installment and really like the way you dealt with the angry customer...not easy I'm sure.

The thing to remember is that if you have an unhappy customer for whatever reason, if you manage to turn that around, and please the customer, you have done as much as you possibly can for that particular customer. There are an awful lot of companies out there in every industry who don't think that is important, and in the short term you might not see any benefit in any extra cost you might have to incur by keeping your customer happy, even if you get no initial repeat business, but in the long run that wil pay off tenfold for you! Word of mouth in retail cannot be beaten!

Good luck and hope you have many many more successful weeks.

I think your mistaken. It sounds to me like you have 30 happy customers and 1 minor hiccup. It seems to me that the chap you let down was placated and encouraging of your new business, plus he got a bottle of wine for the inconvenience.

What do you think he's telling his mates down the pub? "That new Fruit guy is rubbish" or "That new Fruit chap delivered an hour late so he gave me a bottle of wine!!!"

You've turned what could be a negative into a strong positive by that one simple action.

The unhappy customer has probably re-told his story. That you're young, working hard, got a good service, and trying to provide a good service.

I bet he gets you more extra business than the good customers.

That said, you're right to worry about him - that way you're ensuring you get a good reputation. I'd be more concerned if you'd just shrugged your shoulders and got on with it.

Fantastic, a big pat on the back! So good when all the pieces come together & it works, the best feeling, & it is all down to you. Keep plugging away at it.

I really enjoyed this post and am looking forward to reading future ones. I think you are being a bit too hard on yourself about the late delivery and the way you addressed it was masterly. My very best wishes for the future; you deserve them.

I read week1 the other day and to be honest, I was looking forward to week2 because I could see things picking up - Well done.

Your 'bad' customer, you resolved the complaint and I really do think he's now your BEST customer, sometimes people give niceities because they are recieving things (Common courtesy) but the 'bad experience' offered you a situation that you rectified (You could say it was a test from the business gods) and that guy will sing your praises because he knows first hand that a new local business delivers a quality service and doesnt just fob off customer complaints but actually cares and deals with them - We've all cursed the big companies for poor customer service to the point that good or even exellent service is appreciated even more.

He's placed his second order, I personally think you and him will become good friends - Plus he's the ideal person perhaps bounce 'ready-to-implement' ideas off or free trials.

Really well done, I love this type of thread because it influences others positively, me included.

My experience is that customers that are initially let down or disappointed can become your most loyal ones, if you sort out their problem.

That's because they get an insight into what happens when things go wrong - if you have the right attitude towards customer services and can turn a negative into a positive, they'll have far more confidence in your company that with others they haven't (yet) had a problem with.

The best customer service book I read (in fact the only one!) is called Drop The Pink Elephant. I used to give it to anyone who worked with customers at my old firm.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Drop-Pink-Elephant-Ways-Mean/dp/1841126373

It's a v. short book, and it crystalises the best approach to dealing with problems as:
- Apologise
- Explain
- Remedy

In your case you apologised for being an hour late, explained (honestly) that it was a new business, and remedied by giving the guy a bottle of wine.

It really does work almost every time.

Good luck with the new business - sounds like you've got off to a fantastic start.

You'll get lots of advice on here...but the best I've had (and I only learnt its importance after not following it!) is a Warren Buffet quote:
Rule No.1: Never lose money. Rule No.2: Never forget rule No.1.
