Most needed businesses ?

    What are some of the most needed businesses in the UK currently? I have a couple of ideas for starting a business but I want to check which would be most easily be wanted by consumers and so I thought I'd do some digging and see what I found to be the most wanted product that I could manufacture.

    Octonauts party supplies would be nice...

    On a more serious note i was thinking of something earlier but its really gone out of my head now!

    On a crazy note - a pushchair that folded into a car seat would be nice..

    There are methods I saw an ebook once somewhere that gives you the details of whats most searched on goole, ebay etc by country this would probably dictate a particular customer demand.

    I may have a a link somewhere will have a look if its any use msg me.

    Warnie I do exactly the same thing, last night I said to myself stop wasting so much time reading but it can be addictive, I have a look at lunch and most evenings lol, picked up a few ideas but they require capital to start (stock) whereas my current business cost £40 to get up and running lol

    The pushchair into a car seat was actually a serious suggestion - How many times do you as a parent go for a walk and then see someone you know that offers you a lift but hasnt got a car seat? How many times do you go out in the car or forget the pushchair - what if you are a two car family?

    If i was any good as design i would make one myself

    Anything that is consumable - i.e. people buy and need to replace on a regular basis - food is the best example, as we buy it daily in terms of general shopping, snacks, treats etc.

    Finding something that most people want and need more of is the trick, and generally the more consumable the item, the cheaper it is to buy.....so volume is the key.

    I like the idea of the pram/car seat.....you don't need to be a designer Gemma, you just need a recent pram and a recent car seat - the problems you may have is making the pram conform the the British Standard regulations for car seats, but with one of each and the will to chop, shape, read, research etc it could be a winner!

    Jason - The travel system pictured would need a car base in the car already to clip the seat bit off the pushchair into the car - Also that car seat only works for children upto 9 months. From 9 months to 4 years children need a different, forward facing seat.

    Hey It could be one but im not very creative like that - Ill ask my fella about it and my grandad - they could probably knock something up!

    That would be a terrible way to start a business - enter the most crowded and serviced markets in the world.

    The road from idea to on-the-shelf product is a long and winding one with countless crossroads, t junctions. Dead- ends etc etc.
    Been there, done that, got the t-shirt! Even then, there is no guarantee of success. If I remember rightly, something like 99.2% of all product ideas, inventions and filed patents either never make the cut or fail in the market place for one reason or another. Believe me when I idea is not say that I could probably name 1000.
    Remember, an protectable in terms of IP and therefore of very little value. However, the disclosure of a patentable invention must not be disclosed anywhere/any how prior to filling.

    Now, back to the question in hand. Give people what they want. Yes, a good philosophy but you will automatically enter into a crowed market place.
    Come up with something new, i.e no market place and develop a product or service from there. Think Phone, Car, Electricity, The Internet or even face book.
    In the meantime, I would love to shop online (not having to go to the shops) and literally pick my products out of the screen. I think Willie Wonka was on the right lines with Mike TV. Whatever came of that invention??? K J

    Right, whilst all and sundrie are beavering away with product designs based around a car seat, I have been having a little think and there is whole lot more to this tread than meets the eye. :) Self starters everywhere, myself included, are bogged down with trying to figure out the next face book, light bulb, ebay etc, trying to read in between the lines of markets and looking for that gap, the holy grail of business opportunities. We set out our stall and offer products and services to customers that we think they need, or think they should need because of market trends and shifts. The simple question that has kicked off this tread should be the first port of call for any start-up. "Yes madam, What do you need? should be the questions on companies lips as opposed "have you seen anything you would like on the menu?"

    Now I know the answer, (cough: well I think I do), all I need to do now is figure out a way to implement it… Hmmm, Business partners need!!!

    Do you know what is after "most needed business" ?
    for example, you work out some kind of products have good market and want to deal with you, so what would be the next?

    The next step: you will need to be a good resource to be your supply chain, I have clients like you have ideas of what to sell, and then they ask me to found manufacturers or wholesalers to supplier the goods, certainly, the goods are from china with good price and quality is well controled and inspected to guarantee no problem for sell.

    Sorry for my late response. I have been away for quite some time.

    I appreciate everyone input! :) I have done some digging and I have decided which market to enter. I am starting a small jewelry company here in the States. Small scale for now. However if it proves successful, I will relocate it to the UK. It is a competitive market however so the results here will dictate whether or not I open a UK branch.

    The idea of a pushchairs interesting but not really something I can see myself doing....it's a seat. Not only that but given that the safety regulations on stuff like that are fantastically ridiculous I am going to have to pass on manufacturing something like that.

    Telecommunications I have also thought about however with things like Skype and other Voip's out there there is hardly a need for a new service like that when there are already well established companies out there. I've thought about a virtual private server company in the UK as well but I am uncertain, so far, on the need for such a company. I also need more research to figure out the costs of starting one up.


    Great ideas though! Keep them coming! :)

    and call me crazy but later on in life I would LOVEEEEEEE to open a tea house. I LOVE tea greatly and know of some fantastic companies that sell high quality tea for good prices. This isn't something I would do right now at this point in my life but I can easily see myself setting a tea house up later on in life just for the experience of it :)

    Hi Guys,

    You do not need a new invention to make money, you will be chasing the wind for many moons to come this way.

    I agree with one of the other replies, you need to do a business that has high demand. Do not worry about competitors in the same business, sometimes this is good and it keeps you on your toes.

    The most important thing is for you to be motivated, innovated, have a lot of drive and determination to succeed when people around you do not always agree with your ideas. If you feel strongly enough about your business and you have the passion to succeed then you probably will.

    My great Uncle used to always say to me, that jobs in the food industry, barbers and undertakers will always be the best businesses to be in as we will always need them!

    Very true. An old school friend of mine from the 70s who I still stay in contact with has worked at an undertakers since leaving school in 1978. As he jokingly puts it, the dying trade is a job for life. :)

    Things that I have really struggled to get recently are:

    1. new windows for my business premises
    2. a window cleaner for my home
    3. diet ready meals in the supermarket are almost always sold out and the shelves are empty when I get there
    4. someone to repair my microwave
    5. clothing alterations done in less than a week
    6. someone to fit blinds which I didn't buy from them.

    Maybe it is just where I live but these things don't seem to be available round here.
