We sat in on a webinar and the lady stated that the Meta Discription Tag is no longer used for ranking purposes.

Would this be true?

I know some people dont like the page rank on the tool bar but we deal with the older generation that do like and trust the PR button.

The meta description tag has not been used by Google for ranking for a while now. However, it is a very important tool for getting visitors to click on your listing in the search results so you need to pay attention to it.

As others have said the description tag is very important for CTR (click through ratio) as from time to time Google will use your exact description for your listing in their results. We know for sure that Google don't use meta tags at all but the description may have some value on the SEO side of things although if there is any value (I'm not saying there is but there may be) it will continue to decrease.

Yea Its true if you change your meta data your site rank will change also.

Use meta descriptions for what they were designed for and you won't go far wrong. Stop thinking about things in terms of them being "good for SEO...".
