There are so many website to choose from to make your own which would you recommend?

There are plenty of build your own sites out there. If you are building from scratch I would advise dreamweaver CS3. If you just want a basic site I would suggest www.officelive.com as its free! If you want a more indepth site and still want to do it yourself, try streamline.net KEV

It depends on how big your business is. If you're selling small amounts of stuff from home then pretty much any out of the box solution will do. If you're business is bigger than that I'd think about getting one built from scratch. Modern web development platforms like Ruby on Rails can give you a lot for not much investment and the site will better reflect who you are now and grow with you in the future. There are billions of web pages out there and out-of-the-box sites do tend to look & feel very samey which won't help you win customers. Bear in mind also that web 2.0 is really raising peoples expectations of what to expect from a site and again, out-of-the-box & web 2.0 don't go together.

My business is only small at the moment just looking to show my designs and have a secure shop / paypal on it so customers can buy from website at the moment im selling them on ebay.

if you really want to look at it all yourself check out Joomla plus rocket themes templates plus virtumart (joomla componant) also if you use hart internet for hosting they have a quick install button for joomla and make no additional charges for databases or anything else.

Why not stick with e-bay ? I'd always encourage someone to have a go at building their own site but more often than not it turns into a drawn-out tooth-pulling exercise that they're never happy with. There are a huge number of websites out there and people's expectations of what they expect from a website these days are pretty high.

nothing wrong with ebay and i do get plenty on there but i have been approached by people who like to buy one who havent got an account on ebay and i always have to email them with the designs which is why i thought having a website would be more better. if that makes sense? lol

Can I suggest getting in touch with these guys Scamper ? I'll be honest with you, they're associates of ours (now) but they do a lot of design and web work with small businesses that create things like clothes, jewelry and the like. I'm a web programmer and I struggled for months thinking I ought to have enough knowledge to build my own website and got nowhere. They really were a big help.
