Listings on free web directories - help please

Hi

We just listed ourselves on www.freeindex.co.uk. I was hoping that you may be able to suggest some other good sites that are worth having our company details listed on.

What do you do? Where are you based?

I work for a company called Sky Wire who install wireless internet into apartment developments, I went for websites such as RIBA (Royal Institute of Architects) Product Selector, free Yell listing.

Local Authorities tend to have business directories, we have a couple in South Wales.

you can always try dmoz. they are free, and indexed by most of the other search engines

You can list basic details on Kellysearch and Applegate.

Try Gumtree also. You'll have to update your ad every week or so though.

Are you looking for visitors or SEO?

For SEO, generally the easier it is to sign up, the less highly google will regard it, because they are more prone to spamming.

For visitors - try doing some google searches for your industry, the sort of thing people might type in while trying to find you. If a directory appears above you, try and get a listing in it. If not then there is little point, far more people use google than any directory - most people who use directories only do so because they found them via google.

Have you tried Yell...although they're a touch expensive but it depends on what sector you're in because financial services and tradesman do quite well on there.

if you are planning to use directories extensively it might be worth investing in directory submitter. This programme allows you to fill in the form once and then you can use their database to enter your website on multiple directories.

I think you won't get neither

I think it's a long gone thing and it's just easy money for companies charging for submission services.

I don't receive ANY traffic whatsoever from all those directories and backlinks aren't picked up by SE's either.

I wholeheartedly suggest invest time in article submissions and social bookmarking to receive real traffic to your website.

We are listed on several sites already and we are using google ad words which is doing quite well. Really it was just to get the name out there. Not may people advertising provision of bluetooth proximity solutions at the moment really so wanted to get in there early and get established in some good sites.

once you are in dmoz you tend to slowly filter into the lesser free ones eventually anyway... can you not offer some content (in the form of articles) to sites relevant to your industry?
