Liability insurance for a shop

We've always had insurance at our shop for contents, employer's liability, public liability, etc. We've now taken the decision to scrap the insurance for the contents etc and just go for the liability insurance (it's a commercial decision - I know the risks!)

Employer's liability insurance is required by law. But all the insurance companies I've spoken to won't offer it unless it is part of a package including contents etc. Anyone know a company that does a standalone policy?

Hi there

Our website provides an insurance site whereby you can call, email, request call back or even get a quote immediately online. This particular insurance site takes your criteria and selects the provider most suitable to you and your needs.

It would be worthwhile checking it out, its free :)

Good luck

Well I finally found one insurance company that would do the liability as a standalone policy - but the premium was more than I was paying before which included all stock cover. I told him this and he said "well yeah, if you want to insure stock as well the total premium will go down".

Can someone explain why insurance companies seem reluctant to quote for liability on its own - I'm sure there must be a logical reason.

Its not that they are reluctant (in my personal opinion) its because there is no real desire for it - very few shops would just want liability, they'd want to cover fixtures & fittings, stock etc - therefore its more straightforward to have a "package" policy.

I'm sure my brokers could help you out... JSW Insurance - website www.jswinsurance.co.uk

I always get great service from them.

As per Summits post, (thanks for the reccomendation), it is very hard to get EL on it's own at a reasonable cost. We can get it sorted as a stand alone E/L & P/L policy. But they start at around £250 plus tax.

Watch out for the small off the shelf policies, as they tend not to cover injury at your own premises (they are designed for trade that work away).

However, please note that as a retailer you are advised to carry products liability as you are legal responsible for the goods you sell, although the manufacturer is ultimately responsible.

It would be wise just to get a second opinion on your shop policy, as you may find it cheaper to review that, than to buy the cover in isolation.

If you want me to have a look at it just drop me a message.

Liability Insurance is a complex thing and you should get professional help for that so that they can assess your requirements appropiately.

I have used Constructaquote.com on a number of occassions and I found it to be quite useful.

Thanks

Maybe we can help.

What I know about shop insurance is that most insurance companies ask you to insure your stock or your content. At least you have to select one of the two. If you have any questions about this topic, I can ask one of our experts in the insurance team to help you.

I have have one Jappie, how come you have a link in your signature when you're only a free member?

I am not sure if this would help, but there's this Co. called "Lockyers" based in wakefield (west yorkshire). They can do public liability on its own but employer's liability has to be appended to either contents or public liability.

Thanks for the recommendation. I've been talking to Jon and Jamie from Lockyers for the past week and after a lot of head-scratching we've finally found a policy that suits (we're not your typical retail business!) so we are now insured again. If anyone has any tricky insurance requirements then give Lockyers a call as they're very helpful and know their stuff.
