Hi everyone,
I'm trying to add keywords and meta tags to my site, have been advised that I should right click on the home page text and then click view source,
when i do this nothing happens.
Any ideas what might be wrong?

Please reply in very simple terms - i'm no techno!!

Many thanks

Hi Hunny,

Your designer needs to add the keywords into the page and then upload it to the server your website is hosted on.

At the moment you will see a <title> tag at the top of the source code - this is the only tag in there at the moment others can be added easily in your 'offline' copy of your website and then copied up th your server so it is available online.

Have a look at some of the tags on our site to get a clue www.matrixxhosting.com then goto view then source and you'll see the tags at the top of the screen.

Hope this helps,

Rob

If you're actually clicking the 'view source' menu and nothing's hapenning, that's normally due to the temporary folder being full. (I'm assuming you're using Internet Explorer.)

Try clicking the 'Tools' menu at the top, then 'Internet Options'. In there, click the 'Delete Files' button about half way down.

If you've never done this, it could take several minutes to do.

Hi there

Online
You will need to login to your hosting account control panel with the username and password details supplied by your web designer/hosting provider.

You will then need to locate your files through your online file manager and add the meta tags to the source code for each of the relevant pages.

On your own PC
You will need an ftp application such as http://www.ipswitch.com/products/ws_ftp/index.asp
Download the trial version and connect to your website account.

This will then allow you to download the files from your web server and open them up in notepad. Add the appropriate meta tags i.e. keywords, description, keyphrases etc and then simply upload and overwrite the existing files.

If this is all a bit to much just PM me and I will try and get it done for you.

Hello Hunny

This is not something you should be doing yourself if you have not worked on web pages before.

Get a friend or web designer to add these for you, as any errors could stop the whole site working.

Also ensure that the keywords tag does not contain any words or phrases that do not appear in exactly the same manner as on the visible page text. Web designers tend to make this mistake all the time.

To get your website seen, meta tags are only a small detail anyway and contrary to popular belief, do not help much, as search engines have got much cleverer in how they rank a website. Apart from the title tag, other factors such as links and text are what you need to focus on.
