Just throwing this one in here for the experts to analyse.

We have www.powerball-gyros.com at position 1 on Google for the search term 'powerball gyros'.

The term 'powerball gyros' does not appear on page and furthermore a search for the singular 'powerball gyro' which does appear on page is position 3.

In my uneducated view this 'could' mean that the exact match hyphenated domain name is a contributory factor for the term 'powerball gyros'.

Any thoughts?

I think people forget there is such thing as an inner page called over-60s-car-insurance.html etc etc

I would prefer that times 100, then I can target 100 more without buying 100 crap hyphen domain :)

An exact match (non-hyphenated) domain is an advantage - it isn't the be all and end all.
If you had the choice of one or the other you'd be mad to take the hyphenated version. If you didn't then it's a fair second choice.

There really isn't any more to it than that. In short - they recognise the words, that doesn't mean you're getting a bonus for having them in the domain. Everything else being equal - an exact match would beat you.

I don't think you can really draw any conclusion from search results which are so uncompetitive - most of the sites ranking aren't even targeting that phrase. Its just a collection of somewhat related pages, as Google had to take 10 results from somewhere.

Imo, the only results worth trying to compare ranking in are ones where all of the top 10 are actively trying to rank for the phrase in question.

speaking of which, isn't there some trivia about the adobe story? i can't remember the fact, something like the greatest number of inbound links with the same anchor text? (adobe flash player?)

Someone will be along in a minute to say I'm wrong, but car-insurance.co.uk won't get any direct benefit in the search engines over bobsinsurance.co.uk for the phrase "car insurance".
Of course it will.

You have not provided any proof either. The problem with threads like this is that the OP cannot get a reasonable answer for people trying to upstage each other.

Again, I'm not going to provide proof when I'm the one taking the generally accepted to be correct opinion. If anyone thinks something else to be correct, you should show some real proof.

Well I'm done with this thread, the last 12.5 pages have been a waste of time and I don't expect the next 12 to be any better... unsubscribing now :)

Yeah, that's about as much of the story as there is. Shows the power of back links. They rank position 1 for 'click here' because of the sheer number of links saying exactly that.

Close the door behind you and if your curiosity gets the better of you and you do take a peek back in here, can I suggest that you consider trying another forum. One where everyone will hang on your every word and accept everything you say as the gospel truth whether or not you can prove it?

You're one to talk..........

johnnycash's opinion is popular belief.

I have taken more insight from johnnycash's posts on this forum than from your blahblahblah i design websites that look like they were made in the 90's posts and sirearls cryptic rubbish put together.

So if anyone is going to be closing any doors behind them i suggest its you

Ah! An other member of the BDW fan club. Thanks for that!

I can only tell you what works for me. (I am doing very well thank you) and I seldom have any concerns about the opinion of the "heroes" in here who hide behind their anonymity. :p

Oh and I should have said that I believe that some of what Johnnycash says is true. It's the way he says it that creates the problems for him in here.

To throw a spanner into the works, what about a domain (non-hyphenated) that contains ALL keywords but with a geographical prefix?

For example, in continuation of my earlier one, how would www.ukcarinsurance.co.uk (yes, i know car insurance is rarely geo targeted, but it's just an example) compare to www.car-insurance.co.uk? In turn, how would the former domain fare against www.bobsinsurance.co.uk?

Cheers.

carinsuranceuk.co.uk would be fine if available although the amount of searches for that term would be drastically reduced compared with "car insurance"

If you are targetting various major cities.e.t.c ,then using google places would be your best bet.

I would also suggest for targetting various areas you use something like.

carinsuranceuk.co.uk/london as the page name.

I doubt if carinsuranceuk.co.uk is available hence why using hyphens is perfectly acceptable as is using different domain extensions for the purpose of SEO.

How would www.carinsuranceuk.co.uk fare against www.car-insurance.co.uk or www.bobsinsurance.co.uk for the specific search term 'car insurance', though?

Would the addition of a geographical location in the domain hinder the chances of ranking highly for a non-geographical search term, or will it likely make little difference?

I doubt it's available either, just for argument's sake. :)
