Just had an invoice for a satisfactorily completed job by a Jersey based company, the invoice details GST (Goods & Services Tax) at 5%.

Can we claim that back as UK VAT or is it a non-reclaimable independent Jersey tax ?

Thanks. Clear as mud. I will just pay it and not try and claim it back. But it will get passed on to my client as part of a wider job and then get UK standard VAT addded on which he will claim back.

Actually Scalloway's link was pretty clear, here's the specific extract (assuming this is involving good not services)...

"Since May 2008, Jersey has operated a Goods and Services Tax (GST) on some supplies, initially at 3% and then since June 2011 at 5%. This works in a different way to the Value Added Tax systems operated by the rest of the EU. It should only be charged to customers who are based in Jersey."

I would therefore email your supplier & tell him to remove the GST & re-issue the invoice.
