Is it worth upgrading from vista to7

    Is it worth upgrading from vista to windows 7. My laptop is one year old and is slow (it should not be) and is running vista 64 bit (4Gb Ram).

    I am fed up waiting for it to catch up with me, and have the alternative to either go for a clean vista re-install OR a clean windows 7 install.

    Both are a good days work (backup, check, re-install programs and backups etc etc) and I am loath to do it for vista IF windows 7 is a significant update.
     
    Yup do it. Windows 7 is everything Vista should have been but better ;)

    Yesterday I slapped Windows 7 Pro onto an old laptop that used to run XP with 3GB RAM and it not only picked up every driver without fail but it also boots and runs about 75% quicker now...

    I've been using Windows 7 since it was released, both the 32 and 64 bit variants. I find it to be a lot better than Vista was in terms of performance. On the laptops, startup speed, recovery from sleep and battery life were noticeably improved.

    I also took the opportunity to replace my laptop's hard disk with an SSD. That has resulted in a dramatic improvement in performance.

    Do it!

    Been running it since the final release candidate came out and it is sooooo much better than Vista.

    What does 7 do that XP doesn't?

    Note: Use the lappy for surfing, email, writing and a bit of gaming. It's secure and stable and never let me down. What do I get with W7 that I can't do already?

    I was going to say continued support from Microsoft but they have recently extended it till 2014 (a bad choice imo).

    Depending on the games you play, XP may not support more modern games and also won't look as good graphically compared to the same game in W7.

    My first machine used to be running MS-DOS 5.0 :D

    I skipped 3.1 / 3.11 and even 95, I went straight to Windows 98.

    I then went to XP and am now running Windows 7 and think it is the best OS from Microsoft yet :)

    Back in the mid eighties I was working for a company that was using the orginal PCs for controlling test equipment. In the late eighties we had a democopy of Windows 2.0. I remember watching some of the other guys playing with it and thinking that it would never catch on.

    I used to have to tilt my abacus...


    Not really. My first was 3.11 on top of DOS 6.2. A powerhouse of a 486 SX-25 with 4Mb of RAM and a 250Mb HDD.

    I can remember parting with serious cash to upgrade that badboy to a DX4-75 with 8Mb of RAM. It ran TIE Fighter and Hexen like a dream.

    This is partly what it is about

    The cost of a new laptop and having a spare kicking around might be better than just upgrading what you have. More expensive yes but it might better

    I have an L shaped desk and use two machine and productivity pushes right up

    Reading this took me back a lot of years.

    I remember the orginal beta Windows 1 which never really saw the light of day other than in a couple of games , and then windows 2 which was a pale comparison to GEM (Amstrad PC1512).

    The PC wars were understated given the flaming that went on, and the poster that mentioned the PDP8 brought back memeory of thumb callouses. (WD40 should have been supplied by default)

    Are we any better off now? On one hand yes definitely, but on the other hand, the available software hasnt kept apace with the hardware, no matter what camp you are in.

    I suppose the real question is, "Do we feel any happier?"

    I was taught Fortran in the 80's, still cant get my head round it.

    I did the Windoes 7 upgrade advisor from xp and told me to do custom install, every time I have Ive had to reload xp back as my pc comes up with 'input not supported'. I have tried both 32b & 64b, although I know theoretically 64 shouldnt work as I only have 2gb Ram fitted.

    I will upgrade.

    That said I see the FULL version of windows 7 Ultimate is just £80 on Amazon whilst the UPGRADE is £149.

    Can I use the FULL version to upgrade (if I co a clean install)?

    You will have a choice on the full version after you go through the first couple of install screens.

    Hi Guys,

    Another vote for Windows 7 - definetly an improvement on Vista. We have rolled it out at work, home and clients sites and everyone comments on its speed and usability.

    Talking of old schol OS's, I remember my first computer was an Acorn with a green screen and 5.25" floppy disks! Aside from that, a colleage was saying how his Dad's first computer had a 400MB hard drive and the sales man said that is all he would ever need. How times have changed - 2TB drives for £80!

    You could wait for Windows 8 ... that way releases keep coming out there must be one due next year :)

    The pricing of Windows 7 for business seems high though, for my older office PCs I am replacing them with new PCs that have windows 7 pre installed which at £350 per unit vs windows 7 at around £100.

    I would be asking myself why a machine that is only 1yr old is running slowly - it must be a fairly powerful box to be running 64bit with 4gb ram? FWIW I've found Vista to be fine on a work desktop and laptop here (both 2gb ram). I think the press have somewhat overblown Vista's perceived faults. HOWEVER, Win7 does have a number of technical & UI improvements over Vista, so if I was going to install now I would definitely upgrade if possible.

    Mind you, I'd want to know why your machine was running slow - what software has been installed over the year? So much stuff is full of bloat and taskbar applets that you don't need (why does every laptop manufacturuer want to install its own wireless software rather than use Windows's, etc etc). Maybe you've been rooted (ouch!) and the lappy is sending out 750,000 spam emails an hour :eek:

    PS I will join in the 'old computer' willy-waving: My first was an Atari 520ST with monochrome monitor, first PC was a 386DX 33 (that's proper honest MHz not these newfangled GHz that I hear so much about :D, 4mb Ram, 40mb hard disk and SVGA graphics. I added an IIT 80387 co-processor to speed up raytracing in POVRAY - so there ;)

    It has been getting slower for a while. The anti virus is fully up to date so i dont think I have nasty visitors. I have been a bit naughty and installed lots of software to try out and then uninstall. This tends to leave bloat around. I need to spend a good day flushing it out and thought why not put a better operating system in whilst I was at it.

    Its a high end HP laptop with blu ray drive and HD screen, so its not ready to retire yet.

    I bought a windows 7 disc now. It arrived super fast. Alas its a bootleg one though. So I have complained to Amazon and will get my money back and start again looking for a genuine set.

    Yes i also use windows vista and now m fed up with it so i want to install Windows 7 but i just broke my installation disk that i have purchased so how may i install it now !

    Well, as you say if you're prepared to spend a day cleaning it up, you may as well spend a day installing a fresh copy of '7' on it instead - this is what I would do too!

    It runs very well on my old P4 desktop, so should fly on a modern laptop.

    I've also given up my paid-for antivirus and switched to MSE, which seems to be much easier on system resources (apart from when it is updating).
