Invoicing persistent spammers

There is a web marketing company located in Lincolnshire who continue to bombard me with invitations to advertise in the Daily Mail. Maybe you know of them? I won't name them, yet.

Despite repeated requests to stop emailing me, and "unsubscribing", they continue. So, I've decided to fight back.

In response to today's request, I have responded with a formal notice of my intention to charge them £100 for every email I receive from them. I have stated my terms and conditions of sale and made it quite clear of my intention to charge them should they continue to email me.

Has anybody else tried this? So far, no more emails today. I'll let you know how I get on.

How do you intend to enforce the £100 charge per email?

Isn't it easier and less hassle to simply set up a rule, or whatever it might be called in your particular Mail programme, to delete the email before you even see it? Only takes a couple of seconds and you'll get no more emails from that sender.

It's a bit of an experiment really, borne out of frustration with the antics of this company.

Yes, I could create a rule and block the emails, but I shouldn't need to. This isn't an anonymous spammer, this is a UK registered company, full disclosure of people etc.

As to enforcement: I doubt it will be necessary. They'd have to be really stupid to continue sending emails.

Me too but fortunately Virgin Media tuck them away as spam so I don't get to see them

That the most interesting method I´ve heard of for stopping Spam. I´m sure they got very confused reading your reply.
You could also let the daily mail know that someone is spamming you on their behalf.

We get them as well and surprisingly they always seem to have just 1 slot left which we can have for a knock down price.
The Thunderbird junk mail system deals with them.

They made me feel like I was the only one.... best go back to that Nigerian man who wants to come over here and marry me as I am the most beautiful girl he has ever seen. Annoyingly I have paid for 3 flights now and they've all been cancelled at the last minute and we couldn't get a refund! Never mind, he has told me he'll be worth the wait

Rules only work on your office machine. If I go on holiday and check emails on Mail2web it is a real nuisance deleting the spam on a tiny ipad screen with slow wifi.

We set up a rule in Cpanel that deletes most of our unwanted spam, so works server side, and is device independent. ;-)

Make sure you don't go over the small claims court limits with your invoicing. I suspect they will see you in court!

Yes I did get the previous email and the god knows how many before that and they all went to spam...

Email sent to the one listed on my website and its there for customers to contact me, not for people to use to send me random crap.

Would be more effective to continually waste their time. I always enter spam calls on my mobile into the phone book so it comes up PPI spammer. One was very persistent and even if I don't pick up they keep calling despite TPS etc - so I answered and had a nice chat, explaining i understood he had a job to do but it wasn't a very good one, was it. On the contrary, he said, I make a huge amount of money which means that hangups and abuse of all kinds just wash over him, because the next one may make his day! He wasn't apologetic at all, just pragmatic. Your email will no doubt be the same. You cannot invoice them, there is no contract, implied or actual, and they'd get away with it in court. However, when they next email, you could arrange a visit, then not be in and other things like that.

I wish TPS fines money would be paid to the person making the complaint rather than go to the government, it kind of defeats the purpose to invest time making a complaint when there's nothing to gain from it and won't stop all the abusers, just 1.

TPS never fines anyone this exists to pacify the public and discourage even wider abuse of consumer data.

i remember when this system was first set up and loads of companies panicked then quickly realised that they can basically do sfa.

on average they take 2 firms a year to an arbitration stage where they work with them to put them back within the guidelines

So in response to the poster above, the FINES MONEY does not exist so you would get zip

Like a big comfort blanket for the public, if you sign up you get less calls so it serves some purpose

Yes, I was reading about it, looks like a complete waste of time to use TPS at all but I do get the feeling companies are slowly adhering to it and ICO is increasing their grasp.

They fined a few companies for £80k+ but the question is... how much money did those companies make out of breaking the law? They seem to forget that part... if the fine is cheaper than breaking the law, it will just keep happening.

I just placed a complaint on a call I received today but really feel it is just a waste of time.

I can't remember the name of the company, but it was a "proper" business that just wouldn't stop sending spam emails. I managed to get the email address of two senior directors and told them that every time they spammed me I'd forward the email to them. One in, two out. Stopped quite quickly after a couple of goes at that, strangely enough.

utharaprint are my worst enemy, they constantly email me with their "offers" but:

- they use personal emails e.g. [email protected]
- they don't use an email marketing system so can't unsubscribe without emailing them back
- I get the same email every day on 4 different email accounts

The best bit about their emails is the "footer".

So basically they scrape websites for emails and spam the crap outta them until they send an unsubscribe email, I did this once and it stopped but then started from a different email address.

Add the phrase web windows to your spam list, so if that phrase appears in the subject or body it gets automatically spammed.

I cant use gmail or hotmail for my business (they have good spam detection). I have to use outlook which i beleive has non exisitent spam detection so I just have to add each sender to junk sender list.

Some of the most virulent senders use a public email address and each time the email address changes so you cant add them to your spam sender list. I find unique phrases like their brand name and add that phrase to the spam subject/message list.

you have to be a bit careful not to spam a commonly use phrase and create issues for yourself.

Thanks for that. I use Thunderbird and it filters quite nicely.

I also get a lot of blog spam from India via airtelbroadband.in so I'll be setting up a filter for them as well

Don't worry I've set up a filter to forward all of my spam to you so that you don't feel left out

Just got another email from Web Windows, but wasn't sent to the only email I have on my account (contact@domain), they sent it to error@domain - they are making up email addresses to send too, I have a catch all (so many people mistype contact) and see it... really annoying but they do have an unsubscribe in each email....
