We invoiced Yell who kept phoning our home number to try and contact a Gas plumber who had the number 10 years ago. We kept telling them it was no longer his number and had been reallocated to us, but would they stop calling, would they heck. So we invoiced them from my husband's business for time spent answering their calls, couple of hundred quid or something and sent it off to them.

They didn't pay the bill (we didn't expect them to), but do you know what? It worked, they've never phoned us again. That was a couple of years ago.

We actually got a "cease and desist" email from an IT company when we sent them an email to see if they would like to take a look at our service. Our BD guy had emailed them a few days before to see if they wanted to take a look, then sent them a follow-up when he did not hear from them.

The cease and demand was hilarious if I'm quite honest. Full of complete legal jargon nonsense. However they did also threaten to contact our domain name provider and our email server host, which can actually cause problems.

We did not email them again, but they did not have to send the crazy person threat. If someone says they are not interested, then we don't follow up with then.

You may do, but there's an awful lot that completely ignore requests to be removed from mailing lists. One particular recruitment company annoyed me so much that I contacted their ISP, who did nothing. So I then went to the ISP's support forums and complained, where I was given the helpful advice of adding them to my spam filter.

When I told them I would contact ofcom if they didn't take action, I got a phone call from someone that took action against them.

Well indeed - I could have just sat there and read this, but given I have direct experience of receiving a similar "invoice" I thought it would benefit the community to share. However you adding "well done Spammer" just sounds snarky and leaves a unpleasant taste in the mouth. Unnecessary if you ask me.

MikeJ - note we weren't using a mailing list or anything like that. We looked up companies similar to our existing clients and contacted them directly. If they say they are not interested we just don't email them again. It might be different if they are using mailing list software etc since they might just be rubbish at removing you from the list (even if for "technical" reasons if nothing else).
