Hello everyone! We are a new member and a new business in the UK. We haven't seen any topic related to online aggregators and influencer marketing in the UK which we run business in both areas - wanted to know about people's thoughts...

Works really really well if the person/company is actually an influencer.

    Most #influencers are not.
And of course the people they are likely to influence need to be your target. I've never been influenced by one but I don't think I'm receptive to it.

Totally agree! In our opinion it's finding the right influencer and the right platform regarding the brands' needs! If you can achieve that, nothing works better than an influencer marketing campaign. It's the digital ''word of mouth'' and nothing can beat a sincere / real recommendation.

@Brand-Store - there reason there isn’t much happening here is because most members are the sort of business who would benefit from influencer marketing.

Don’t even recall anything I’ve wanted to buy being promoted by anyone. Even the adverts I see on TV are presented by people I’ve never heard of.

    Only the wife ;)

There you go then, I just need to hire your wife as an influencer and you'll buy anything I'm selling.

    This marketing game is easy.

Unfortunately, most of the #influencers that are being pushed are randoms on insta or twitter that have a few hundred thousand fake followers, no one listens to them.

How sincere / real a recommendation is from an influencer who is being paid for such comments?

Most people I know can see these people for what they are, it’s nothing new, so called celebrities have worked on adverts for decades, taking the money even if they feel the product or service is useless.

That said, there are plenty of lemmings around.

This kind of comment makes you look either clueless or a bit biased about marketing

Influencer marketing is as old as the hills, though the term itself is fairly recent - it can be effective for certain brands - but the influencer needs to be chosen for their relevant influence, not self-appointed

I assume that anyone who calls themselves an influencer isn't.

One of the companies I worked with picked up a lot of business from architects when Prince Charles (as he was then) talked about a product they supplied.

A fashion jewelry brand was featured in L'Oreal adverts, they did well out of that. One of the models went to school with the business owner.

Unfortunately, I don't think these are the kind of influencers that are being touted here.

Agreed, but I guess it can work well as a strategy to sell tat to lemmings.

Trying to sell something valuable to someone discerning might need a different approach.

The average project size was around £35M, average product order was ~£400k.

It depends on the product and ethos of it, as well as the target audience. It works best for the younger demographic, who are following 'influencers' in a different way than older generations and are more invested in what influencers are using.

I've worked in influencer marketing. Before starting my business, I did recommend against it a couple of times when I felt it wouldn't work for the product or campaign. Some employers don't always listen when they have an idea in their head.

On the flip side, you have influencers that will recommend any product that comes to them and it's always apparent when an influencer does this. They probably don't use the product/service.

I think that's why Molly Mae works well with younger generations. She only recommends products she likes, paid or not paid.

    What is an influencer?

I would think someone with reach/a following, credibility and an outlet/s. Importantly, someone who can motivate people to take action.

You could become one on here, locally or on social media.

Rick Shiels did a good interview with Sophie Walker last year about influencers in Golf.

A good point they raised was it's not the number of followers that influencers attract but the engagement.

Well worth watching from start (this video jumps to about 5 minutes in though)

My wife tried to get me to buy a new shirt the other day. I said there's nothing wrong with the one I've been wearing for the last ten years. She pointed out the hole in the sleeve. I pointed out that the rest of the shirt was fine and most of the buttons matched. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I now have a new shirt.

Didn't it used to be called "celebrity endorsement"?

As has been mentioned above it really depends on what your business is.

Newer tech type businesses (gaming etc) are likely to have success with gaming influencers.

Those selling household goods I'd imagine less so.

There's definitely a very niche market who could make use of it but there are so many chancers out there calling themselves influencers these days that it would take someone savvy on the business side to know exactly what they were trying to achieve and have researched the influencers potential impact.

Hi Fulya! I really recommended you to surf on TikTok Creator marketplace: here you can check bloggers, raitings and costs - it's really useful

We tried an influencer this summer, they approached us first and I checked out their social media presence. 5 figure followers on Facebook, YouTube and instagram with daily posts being produced. We sent a product back in April and they produced a great video of setting up and using it. These days they don’t post it’s use every day but still put out the occasional plug.

We offered a discount code so their followers could get 10% off and allow us to monitor their “influence”.

Sales to date have produced a profit of over £4k on an item costing us £150 to give away.

It's rather silly to claim that 'nothing works better than an influencer marketing campaign' can you back up this claim with evidence. There is a huge difference between word of mouth recommendations from a trusted known source and influencer marketing.

If you had a background in marketing you would know that different channels and different marketing approaches are needed based on what the business does and its target customer base.

    OMGVape,
that was a really good result for very little effort - I would be interested to know why you didn't do more? or try other influencers? Do you do anything that has a better return?
