INDUSTRY PARTNERS NEEDED

One of the research interests in the department of Design, Manufacture and Engineering Management concerns shape or pattern generation or recognition. We are currently looking for industry partners to become involved in research in this area.

We are looking for industrial partners who make 2D or 3D shapes and patterns and who want to improve the process of fitting shapes into a layout for cutting, stamping, printing etc. Perhaps you make groups of similar components, or you design decorative items

If your company is involved in making 2D or 3D shapes or patterns, whether functional items or decorative designs, then we would like to hear from you. We are undertaking research aimed at making it easier to optimise the process of creating (or recognising) shapes.

It is often easier for a human to assess the efficiency of fitting a series of non-identical shapes into a defined area - by looking at it - than it is to program an infallible set of rules to enable automation of the layout process. This research aims to make progress in the field of improving the definition of the rules; this is expected to deliver benefits such as minimising wastage and minimising the time needed to optimise a layout.

If these are familiar problems for your company, then please contact me and I will put you ion touch with the academics leading our Design research.

Ideally by integrating cutting-edge academic knowledge with a practical application in industry we will create benefits to both parties.

Regards,
Margo
