How to wrap a pallet correctly ?

Hello everyone

I have a question about wrapping pallets, which I hope you can help me with.

I know there are lots of vids etc online showing this, but what I want to ask you is this: In almost all vids/pics about this process, the spaces at the bottom of pallets are wrapped as well. However, if pallets are to be lifted with pallet truck/forklift, why the bottom spaces are covered as well ? Is this done intentionally, as the stretch film is expected to tear easily? If not, how can the front side of forklifts enter inside the spaces which are located under the pallets ?

Thank you

It won't matter because the film around the holes made by the the FLT are in established film formation. So more often than not if you wrap the whole base with five wraps your efforts will remain effective even when punctured

Wrapping the base is the best way to do it

Thank you for your answer Jeremy.

So, can forklifts easily make holes on the film, through the two forks on the front of it ?

They certainly can. Don’t forget to elevate the pallet off the ground so you can get right round the bottom of it. Start by tying the film around one of the corner blocks on the pallet, pull tight and around you go!

I get nauseous doing it, ever since a terrifying experience on a Waltzer many years ago, but that’s another story...

Hello Simon, and Thank you for your reply.

In the videos I watched, nobody was actually elevating the pallet off the ground. When you say elevate the pallet off the ground, Do you mean I should initially make sure that I tie a knot at the bottom of the pallet, before loading the pallet with the products ?

    Thank you.

Yes tie the first end to the pallet .If you don't the role won't unwind and you also need some tension. As when you wrap with some tension the wrap is much stronger overall

Simon and I are the best in the UK when it comes to pallet wrapping:)
You came to the right place

    Thank you Jeremy.

What do you think Simon mean when he said that I should elevate the pallet off the ground ? Is it about making sure that I tie a knot at the bottom of the pallet, before loading the pallet with the products ? Or do we have to do sth else with the pallet?

No it is easier to have it a couple of feet off the ground as you need to wrap the bottom with an inch or two just going under the kegs of the pallet. With the pallet on the ground it is hard to cover the bottom part

I’ve never wrapped a pallet but I could have guessed the right way without the explanations. You just need to employ a bit of logic.

Trouble it most of the crud on YouTube is wrong, why people insist on relying on YT for advice is beyond me. Saw one the other day where they were trying to cut wood with a hacksaw.

    Thanks everyone for the answers.

The one other thing I would like to ask is this: I understand that we should cover the bottom of the pallet, and that the forklift can easily go through the stretch film through the two forks at the front...
But in this case, when the stretch film is torn, dont you think it would be unsafe in the trucks/couriers if they put some other parcels on top of some parts of the stretch film which randomly lie on the ground (as the film is torn, it will have frays) ? In order to prevent this, after the forklift opens a space through the stretch film, should we cut off the excessive parts of the stretch film ?

Because otherwise, it would be like a mess in the trucks/ships isnt it ? And also dangerous, as another parcel can exert force on the frays of stretch film lying on the ground, and result in a pull of the stretch film off the parcel.

    Thank you

I have no prior experience so thats why I would like to make sure, I do it correctly.

Actually just trying to figure out how frays can be prevented, after the stretch film on bottom of the parcel is torn apart by the forklift...

Planning to send a parcel shortly thats why I asked actually. Watched videos, and tried to learn in this way, but what is said here is quite different, and has led different questions about the frays which may appear on the stretch film.

Perhaps I will learn by trying, but I just would like to avoid hassle when I arrange a pick up day.
