Hi, I have noticed your website has many errors on it, would you like me to help you with them?

No thanks.

Er oh oh erm, ok bye.

Either my website is THAT bad he was expecting me to bite his hand off or he is worse than me at making sales calls.

Made me laugh if nothing else.

That is pretty bad but the most annoying ones for me are PPC/SEO agencies who call to say they're from Google to get to the business owner:

"Hello"

"Hello, I'm calling from *insert random digital marketing agency*. Do you need...

"Sorry, I was told you were calling from Google?"

"We're Google certified"

"Sorry I only use Ask Jeeves. I do not recognise Google as a search engine option"

In all fairness, I don't really mind cold callers. I never buy anything from them but I appreciate it's not a fun task for the caller. Any attempt at deception I find annoying though.

I hate cold callers with a passion. I realise they are doing a job and it is better than them dealing drugs to children but there is a lot in between.

I work from home sometimes, the only people that have my landline are my grandparents and my mum. My phone can go 15 times a day from 8am until bout 9pm. I have to answer as it could be the grandparents. 90% of the time it will just be silence. Admittedly I prefer that to someone trying to sell my anything or tell me my pc is infected but it is really annoying. Cold calling should be banned - by cold calling I mean companies I have never used and have bought my details from someone. I do not mean companies I have used in the past, I think thats a little different.

Telephone preference service and ex-directory, on two different lines into the house (one Voip, one through Virgin)

We get less than three phone calls per year from people we don't know. If it's just your mum and grandparents, I'd get a new number and keep it private.

I have a cordless phone I take upstairs to my office when im working at home.
But I should not have to buy anything because someone wants to flog me their crap.

I never buy anything from a cold caller, even if I did listen to their spiel out of principle I would not buy anything from them.

I have never given my landline number to anyone other than those 2. I dont even known the number to give out. I might just get rid of it completely to be honest.

We got some lady ringing trying to sell SEO courses, she doesn't breath for the 13min script she's reading, doesn't ask a single question until the end.

They haven't called back after leaving the phone on the desk and leaving her talking to herself.

The last call I got I just said " I am falling asleep." He said .." what was that"? I just repeated it and he hung up. Think it might work!

You're probably stuck with it as part of a broadband package. That's why we've got the Virgin phone. Are you ex-directory?

As this is posted in the General forum, I assume that a non-sales person can express an opinion. I am a non sales person and maybe, or maybe not, some of the sales people posting hear might be interested in a little feedback from people who buy services.

This was a polite and short call and I wish all sales calls were like this. In fact if I received such a call I might actually not have said "no thanks" and might have been genuinely interested what this person had to say. Why? Because there was no hint of a hard sell to follow.

With the usual sales call I get, you can tell that the hard sell is coming within a split second and you will know that the experience is not going to be good. They will try to be over-polite. They will be over familiar ("hello how are you today"). They will make untruthful claims ("someone will be in the area tomorrow" ). They will not let you interject. They might be polite, but very controlling and focus on themselves rather than listening to you. Some try to focus on you, but the focus is usually by asking intrusive and commercially confidential questions such as who your present supplier is etc.

Just a few thoughts.

Like many on here I hate unsolicited sales calls and would never buy anything from them.

I always answer my phone with my name rather than the company and my pet peeve is when the caller asks whether he can speak to Ian Johnston. I always respond brusquely that if he had been listening he would know that he was speaking to me which tends to put them on the back foot before they have started their sales pitch

If you tell them your property is rented and that you don't have access directly to the landlords number they soon disappear as its pointless!

Caller: Hi, I'm calling from _________ and I'd like to talk to you about [insert product or service]
Me: Yes, of course you can. As long as you let me talk to you about Jesus first....

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Don't you just hate it though when you get an asian chap or lass on the end of the phone telling you their name is David, Michael or one of the better ones last week... Rupert!

Some call centres actually have the guys having to change their name... according to the ones that I've questioned, the same reply... Because some phone operatives struggle to get "THEIR" name understood by the person that they're calling?

Really? ... So Balal, Nadeem and Iqbal are that difficult? - the call centre can't have the ANANTHALEKSHMI's or the Anandavenkatakrishnan's use shorter versions, such as Ana? is it really that hard for us simple westerners to understand? yet they're telling us that they need OUR details before the continuation of the phone call can be made due to DATA PROTECTION.... seriously get a grip call-centre management... don't insult your staff or your customers intelligence... You're asking your staff to lie to someone before confirming information due to Data Protection!!??

What happens if I say my name is Dave... when my actual birth name is David? or the Mike's, Mick's, Jan's, Liz' out there...

Irony is not my best forte but surely this is one of the best out there?! :D

It's the liars that get me annoyed. They get details from Companies House and my husband is a Director of my company (just in case of emergencies), so the callers always ask for him even though he has nothing to do with the business. When we say he is out of the office they say they spoke to him a few days ago and he said he would buy this, that, or the other!!!! Amazing skills they have, seeing as he is never in the office! I generally lose patience when they start telling lies.

If I have the time and feeling mischievous I let them think they are helping a worried Microsoft user. They get halfway and then pass you onto their "supervisor" at this point they ask whats on your screen I usually say a website called www.f#*!you.com sit back and listen to the hilarious profanity.

Ha! This made me laugh. I think I could also write a book on how not to do a sales call. I've heard all sorts of cringing sales patter in my last job enough to make your toes curl!
Can't believe they said no thanks!
