How long until domain name becomes available?

Hi Guys, I'm after registering a domain, which is currently registered by another person.

Here are the domain details:
Registered on: 27-Jul-2009
Renewal date: 27-Jul-2011
Last updated: 01-Jun-2010

Because this domain is due for renewal, underneath it says:

Registration status:
Renewal required.
*** This registration has been SUSPENDED. ***

I wish to register this domain, but how long will it be before i can? As it looks like the previous owner dosent want to renew - and the domain hasnt been used for the past 18 months.

Obviously, i wouldn't want to make any contact with the current 'owner' as odds are they would renew it, to try and sell to me at a profit. Which would be a no go.

How long will it be before this domain is back in the public domain again, and i will be able to register it?

Oh, its a .co.uk domain.

for .uk domains its 60 days. see http://www.nominet.org.uk/registrants/maintain/renew/ for more information.

There's no _exact_ answer, as Nominet don't always drop on a schedule (otherwise it makes the drop-catching easier) and the original registrant may still renew it, or the domain may be subject to a dispute/action preventing it from being deleted.

Due for deletion on/after 27/September

why dont you use a a serive like dropcatcher to secure the domain. ive used it before to secure a .co.uk domain.

Be careful if others want that domain! A drop list service might pull it before you do. They watch when the domain is about to be dropped then use massive server power to request that domain name.

Once they got the domain (if they want it they usually get it) will then auction it off.
