Hi new to the forum, just thought I would just say hi, I don’t have a business set up yet but I have a dream to start a food truck one day. Currently working in a office and have done for the past 20 odd years but the dream would be to start my own food truck working in a spot Monday to Friday and then festivals etc on weekends, I have a few ideas and will be reading advice on here too to educate myself a bit more. Thanks

Welcome @Benfurny1980

There are number of threads here on UKBF about food trucks and festivals and whatnot that will give you something to ponder.

Finding a pitch for a food truck is getting more and more difficult - if the local council even give you a license.

Festival pitches aren't cheap. £20K seems to be normal for the big festivals. The local school fete is a lot cheaper (around £500). But bids for the 2027 festivals are already being submitted.

Welcome to the UKBF as above quite a few threads on this topic so a little searching around and should find a lot of useful info on the topic.

My local postman has been dreaming of this for sometime now and this year has dipped his toe in the water, got himself a trailer and there seems to be no holding him back now. Id say start of at smaller events like he's done, summer fates a few boot sales and from this he's suddenly picking up a lot of leads even at these "smaller" events he's been overwhelmed with the response plus its taught him a lot about the logistics ie making sure you got enough stock with you and you defiantly need a card reader.

So stop dreaming and jump in "part-time" and learn the ropes. Best of luck

Thanks for the message it was just what I needed, think my plans are to buy a horse trailer and convert as that would be the only way financially for me to start up and plus I would enjoy doing the conversion. I think I would start with car boot sales as your postie has, probably a good way to dip my toes in as you say

Why go to all the expense of converting a horse box when second hand trailers aren't expensive. This is just one example of a supplier:

You may also need a van or large vehicle to tow and keep your stock. And sleep in if it's a weekend event.

But finding a pitch is still the biggest challenge. You can be lucky like @WaveJumper postie but the local boot fairs round here have a waiting list for food pitches.

I would buy a secondhand van rather than converting a horse trailer. You just do not know enough about running a food truck business, to know exactly what you need in the trailer. You can always do a conversion later and sell the second hand van - probably for the same price as you bought it for.

Hey don"t laugh but my side hustle (not sure we ever called them that 50 odd years ago) was selling soft toys on a stall in Petticoat Lane on a Sunday was great fun met a lot of interesting people, now 50 years on the thought of going into London does not excite me at all
