Hi been working on my website its been online for a couple of months now with no sales www.classjewellers.co.uk. Could you take a look and see if you can see why or offer me any advise?

Thanks for all your help

Hi, as no experts are around I will give you my shoppers opinion. Love the colours. Found the homepage confusing, at first I thought it was just an add for a new shop opening soon. You need a proper welcome and explanation of what you sell. The menu was overpowering on the eye, needs categories and sub categories to make it easier to read.
I have been told that a web site needs items on the home page with prices to tempt the customer inside.
Could not find postage charges, these should be very clear or customers click off.
Hope this helps. I DO like the site and hope it takes off for you, good luck.

Hi :)

Ok, first off, I am sorry I disagree with most of what ImageOnline has to say, except ..yes, clear that new shop opening lark....

earrings - 4 - 2.76%
welcome - 4 - 2.76%
jewellers - 4 - 2.76%

#6 What would you put on the front page of a jewellery shop if not items for sale?

Hi there, I know a little about website optimisation... to start with you website title tags are all wrong... type in "website title tags" in google webmaster tools and you should get some good advice... essentially they should be your search terms... and NOT your website address...

A nicely designed site by all accounts. Just thought I'd warn you I received a 404 error (page not found) when I clicked on the contacts tab at the top...
Good luck with the site!

Nice site but no way on earth I would buy from you.

No about us - to help reassure me then
No phone number
No address
A hotamil email address - get it linked to the site
No real details about dispatch.

No no no

You have a long menu on the left. I personally would have at the top of this - about us - contact us - why buy from us etc.

Give the customer confidence.

The site has focussed on the product and forgotten all the rest of the stuff that matters greatly.

For example...

We make every effort to ship your order as quickly as possible. Please allow seven (7) to ten (10) business days for delivery of in-stock items. We will notify you if any item is delayed.

We DO NOT accept orders nor do we ship outside the United Kingdom

...................

We hold stock of all items and have a policy of dispatch within 24 hours of receipt of any orders. Dispatch is made using blah blah. If for any reason there is liable to be a delay we will contact you immediately blah blah.

Sorry but we are not currently accepting orders from outside the UK.

If you have any general or specific stock queries then please contact us using our contact form.

........................

etc etc

What's the relationship of the two cateogry listings - I prefer the layout of the ones accessed from the right hand category under the search box, except that doesn't appear until you access 'more information'

You seem to have some layout issues with IE (6&7)

Hi Sarah

Just another shoppers opinion if I may:

Things I like:

1. the colours
2. your poducts (but see below about images)
3. header image
4. ease of use - even a numpty like me could find my way around easily.
5. the email to a friend - made it feel more personal

Things I don't like:

1. the lack of contact details - hotmail is a real NO.
2. the ad for your physical shop on the home page and contact us - I am buying online so why should I care?
3. The home page images - you have some nice quality items but the home page images look like cheap costume jewellry. If I was looking for a diamond ring I wouldn't get past the home page.
4. the different size boxes for the products, my eyes are all over the place trying to follow them and I did expect the price to be near the buy now button so took me a moment to work out where the prices are. Would look better if the boxes were a static size and then I pressed for more info.
5. when I went into more info I got the menu on the left and categories on the right but they are the same thing - seems like a waste of space and the repetition is a little annoying.
6. no info on ring sizing - I don't seem to have a choice so no sale on a ring. Why not have a page of ring sizes people can print and cut out to find their ring size? but the products definately need ring sizes to choose from.

I think the main issue is I do not feel that you are trying to connect with me as a customer, all those references to the physical shop, lack of contact details and no about us (speaking directly to your online customers). It makes me feel unwanted or that it is just an add on to your shop (which translates to second best).

Hope that helps and I wish you luck with it.

there seems to be a 'hidden' link to www.edisc.co.za in the source code

Code:

affect the functionality of your site and is completely invisible in the front... Jaun-Vincent -->

Thanks again I know its a bit of a problem. I have little knowledge of we design and have used a template for the store. I don't think I am able to change the layout of the menus - Im sure you can but I wouldn't know where to start! After the feedback off here I am going to change the left menu to something more simple e.g Silver, Gold, Watches etc.:)

Thanks for your help. I will look at these issues but I do agree on them all!! Its just a matter of trying to figure out how to change them as I am new to this game!! Going to change the menu layout to something more simple this afternoon! For me the customer is sooooo important and you are right I have lost focus somewhere!

Thanks

Thanks for that I will look into it I think it is something to do with the template for the store. Will it make any difference to the website?

Hello again Sarah, Well done for all your efforts this afternoon. You have been very busy. The menu is much easier to read. I know the home page is not finished yet but it looks much better. Your shop name is in lower case but class has a capital C. Not sure if its right or not. Don't panic you will get things right in the end. Read terms and conditions on other jewellery sites, see how they lay out their home page what delivery charges are etc. All remarks on here are meant to be helpful so do not take them to heart. Keep going girl, youre getting there. I hope to become one of your happy shoppers. Lisa

Hi Sarah,

Just following on from earlier points... the website needs to have a more descriptive title and description, to be in with a chance with the search engines; also... are you not able to have an email account with the hosting company?

Hello, sazkat

About your website:
1) you must to do some SEO (search engine optimization) work on your website,
2) advertise,
3) advertise,
4) advertise, if serious advertise both online (google adwords) and off-line (newspapers, radio, etc.) to get traffic (buyers) to your web-store. It's not possible to describe things you must to do in one short email. Selling online (in common with off-line) isn't just to set up a website. You must learn HOW to sell right. I have some helpful resources. I have just registered in UKBF and have no rights to include links to other resources yet. If you are interested in I can send those to you if you give me e-mail.

Best wishes
Ugis

Hi Sazkat

A few things that I noticed.

The image on your homepage is very over dominating and as it's not a high resolution image it's not really a massive selling point for you. What would be better would be a small rotating selection of top selling items, or specials for the month.

Your logo banner does not return you to the homepage, you have to click on home, which is also giving random errors. It's fairly conventional to have your logo clickable and for that to return customers to the homepage so it would be a good thing to accomodate.

Everything from delivery downwards should be on your top navigation bar not your left, this is best left as your products particularly as you have a long category list.

Free postage on orders over £1000 is really high, and not really much of an incentive, consider setting it at £50 or £100, or something much lower, your average customer is not going to spend £1000 online so its just not going to be a selling point for them.

Personally I don't like the colour scheme at all, but thats my personal opinion but I find it a bit dull, the site doesn't standout, I think a better, brighter, more curvy template would be a better choice.

Your navigation bar is cutting off the end of the words on the real orchid jewellery & terms and conditions, which makes the site look less professional.

It takes a lot of click to actually buy an item, if I click on Buy Now, I can't actually buy now at all, I still have to add it to the cart and then I still have to checkout and then when I get there I'm immediately irritated to find the dreaded register first section. Customers do not want to register first in order to buy an item, they want to add to a basket and then checkout, this should all be streamlined into one process, the more clicks it takes a customer to purchase the more chance you have that they will just abandon their shopping basket and go elsewhere. Customer registration should be taken as part of them giving their delivery and invoice details in order to make it smoother. Yes you want them to be able to login and see their orders and to have that detail captured for newsletters etc, but that should not require prior registration.

Even at registration stage I can see that I still have 5 more stages to go before I have paid and can leave the site, and it's taken 3 click just to get to the registration, I would have most likely left the site by now unless I really really wanted the item.

Hotmail address as other have said is a huge no no, I would not buy jewellery from a site which only uses a hotmail address and which has no postal address. Also it is now a legal requirement to put your company registration and address details on your site and there is a sweep of internet retailers due to be carried out starting form this month to check that all the Distance Selling Act regulations are being complied with & correct terms and conditions are being displayed which includes a no quibble returns policy.

good morning all,

I see there are still a few night-hawks around. This is a great thread, and I'd be grateful if I could bring in our new shop for some brutal critique/gushing compliments!!

Learning loads as we go, but nothing better than some hands on experience of any of you get the chance:

shop.blackrockhire.co.uk

I'm keen to hear thoughts about how well it keeps people on the site, and ease of purchase (we have a registered user requirement for purchases)

Thanks in advance!

hello, i honestly don't this the site is all that great, did you use a shopping cart script?

the links on the side look like a computer application, and i rarely see them used on the internet apart from on submit buttons.

Hi Jason
As per my post to Diggerboy can we keep this thread to the question asked please. You haven't previously posted so it would be a good idea to post a hello post in the introductions section and then start your own thread regarding your keywords. Just that I'm sure the original OP would prefer to keep their thread on track with advice about their site. Welcome to ukbf though :)
