HPS - Outsourced Payroll

Hi folks

We had an IT company build our site and they were meant to do the SEO, but we don't think they did, so did a lot of it ourselves from books we brought.

Now all of a sudden the site doesn't rank so high and we can't understand why. It had a higher rank we think than it does now.

Can anyone help or suggest what we may have done for it to lose it's ranking and what we can do to fix it please?

Thank you for your help

Hi

Thank you for reply, but I don't get what it is you are telling me such as content to keyword is poor, does this mean we need to fill the page with more keywords?

Also, the title tag is that the bit where you hover over the tab in the browser and it comes up with Outsourced Payroll Services blurb and the web address underneath?

Thanks for your patience, we are not experts as you can tell.....

You say you have done some of the SEO yourself from books, was one of the methods you used link building? If so you may have fallen foul of Google's transition rank algorithm. It drops your ranking after such activities to help identify non organic link building. If there is an SEO intention behind the links (as in an artificial intent) it waits to see if you undo the changes and then identifies you as an SEO activity. If you wait a while your rank should return, Google just assumes it was a natural organic trend or spike.

Maybe you should go back to the company who built your website and ask them to fulfil the SEO (if that is what they were supposed to do)
You have no Heading Tags
Since you are using Wordpress why don't you try installing Yoast http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-seo/ which is a wordpress plugin and this may help you

Google keep changing the goalposts on SEO and so there may be various reasons why your site rank dropped

Also what are YOU actively doing to promote your own site? Many people think that I have a website and that is all I have to do to keep on top of it. Wrong, you need to keep updating with new fresh content, and look at other ways of boosting your own site profile. I hope that helps somewhat :)

What is guest blogging and where do you find relevant sites for blogging? Is there a way to narrow them down or do we need to blogg anywhere and everywhere?

[FONT=verdana, geneva, lucida, arial][FONT=arial, sans-serif]Spinoza[/FONT][/FONT]

Don't really understand what a transition rank algorithm is or how it works. Googling it comes up with lots of really complicated stuff.
When you say artificial intent, does that mean blogg or link build with the intention of SEO?

[FONT=arial, sans-serif]123Simples[/FONT]

The company said they would build us an SEO friendly site that would rank well on Google. We just, (and I can't believe I am going to say this as I tell all clients never assume anything), assumed this meant they would do whatever it is they do to get the site showing in search results.
How do we find out what the goal posts are?
To promote the site we use sites that ping our website onto directories, we tweet, (sort of), linked in, freeindex, blogg on our own site and copy that to other sites such as prlog, (though only just started doing that). To be honest we brought SEO for dummies and started using that and Social Networking for Dummies. I think the problem was my partner Jon said he had no idea what the web company were doing as he couldn't see anything, unlike accounts where clients get reports, we saw absolutely nothing for our money and we didn't think they were cheap compared to others.
What do you suggest when you say boost our own site profile? How do we do this or is that a loaded question?

[FONT=arial, sans-serif]RedEvo[/FONT]

I am not asking for a review of the site, I am asking for help. Something has gone wrong and before we embarked on spending money with a firm that can do something that we can't actually see, I thought as a free member I would come on here and ask if anyone can help. I understand the difference between blogging on here and dropping links and having a genuine concern I need help with.
If my request is in breach of the rules, I apologise, however having read the rules, the nearest I can find to a breach is
Spamming
Spamming is entirely prohibited. Spam includes the posting of non-relevant content, URL links, repetitive posting of nonsensical posts, and unauthorised advertising within the forums.
I posted a link to our website which I felt was appropriate so that folk could help me. I am not asking for them to review the site, but any advice on why we may have dropped in Google or what may have changed or we have broken on the site to stop it working would be very gratefully received.

Toni is a girls name by the way, well it is in my case

[FONT=arial, sans-serif]Faevilangel[/FONT]

Not sure what header meta is, but will check out the SEO guide as it looks very user friendly and not full of tech speak.

I think we will have a play with things suggested and then if all else fails we'll have to get someone in, though we are a bit dubious as my business partner says, we can't see what they have done.

Thank you everyone who has replied, while some may have gone slightly over my head, I do get some of it.

Toni

Not sure if we are on the right track but the google SEO guide is very eye opening, not sure why, but looks like the company we used, didn't follow the rules set out by google.

I changed the first or home page completely, (text wise), and changed the meta things and description. Trying to make the whole meta thing more natural like talking to someone rather than if we sold cars, Car Sales Dealer, more like HPS - Offer quality, reliable used cars at affordable prices. This actualy tells someone about our site rather than some generic text that doesn't really tell anyone much of anything and I'm guessing google spiders as well.

I read a post that said spiders or crawlers are like children, they have to be taught and as they are self-teaching to some extent, if it's too hard, they don't index you or rank you, not sure if indexing and ranking are the same.

It is about Heading Tags - in your case you have no H1 or H2 tags

Also your page description, or content - for example say YOU were looking for Payroll Services on Google - what would you type in?
Now you could type in payroll services in (the area you are working from) but I can't seem to see the area on your homepage or about us page. Fair enough your contact page says were you are, but it might be useful to say on your homepage (for example):
HPS SME Business Payroll are one of the leading UK professional payroll companies, based in the West Midlands. With the latest HMRC changes coming into effect from April 2013...

Keywords then would be "hps, sme business, payroll, professional payroll, west midlands, hmrc"

Of course this is only an example, and one of the most annoying things I think that any web design company can do is make their own link open directly on top of your website - at least we have the decency to make our links open new browser windows - so I would ask them to change that - after all you don't want people getting to your site, and then clicking a link which replaces your site with the designers. Only my opinion

Happy Easter

Guest blogging is finding other people who have a blog on their site, even throw a post up on here asking if anyone wants a guest blog. The site owner gets some more content and you get your name/brand out there. It's genuinely win/win.

It's better if it's sort of industry related as that way you'll get the authority from it, which is great for Google/SEO rankings.

For example; if a large design website or a large Manchester website, say the Manchester Evening News allows me to do a guest blog post and I link it to my own website, then that boosts our position as we target design and Manchester for our keywords.

Hope that helps :D

Thank you for the reply, will do what you say, is it allowed to ask on here if I can guest blog on someone elses site? I've already been warned when I first joined for dropping links?

Not a mod but I would think that's ok, just post out saying does anyone want a guest blogger? I want to write on this sort of subject and just want a link in exchange.

Don't need to post your link out publicly tell people to PM for details.

Sorry, dumb question, what does OP and PM mean?

Going back to the guest blog thing, I'm guessing the General Business Forum or maybe the startup clinic would be the forums to use?

Just want to double check, Barbara is it OK to ask if anyone wants a guest blogger? Had 2 strikes in the past for not understanding, don't really want to break any more rules [FONT='Verdana','sans-serif']unintentionally[/FONT].

Hi Toni

OP = Original Poster, ie you.
PM = Private Message

I don't see any harm in asking the question regarding guest blogger.

:)

regarding your smilies, just tap the one you want to use from the Smiles Box and the typo version will appear in the text box and when published the actual face will appear.

BB Codes http://www.ukbusinessforums.co.uk/forums/misc.php?do=bbcode show the shortcut keystroke combinations to create them - likewise as BarbaraF says you can either simply click a smiley ;) and it will pop one into the post, or again the keyboard shortcuts are here:
http://www.ukbusinessforums.co.uk/forums/misc.php?do=showsmilies

I tend to use a combination of both, and if I was being very cheeky I could even link to another smiley hosted somewhere else and post that in instead -
smiley427.gif
and make up my own smilies - however I have not checked the rules completely on UKBF so I may be in trouble by doing this ;)

You must keep in mind that SEO is a discipline which is constantly evolving, and what used to work 6 months ago, may not work today. It sounds like the IT company you hired knew exactly what they were doing it in the first place.

Hey,

Are you any good at keyword research? If so I would find a list of 25 - 50 pretty high search volume exact match long tail keywords (1000 - 2000 Local Monthly) with less than 20,000 competing pages.

For example if my main keyword was blue widgets, my long tail would be...

How to save money with blue widgets.
How many blue widgets does it take to go bankrupt.

What I would do then is simply write an article (or outsource article writing) for each of the long tail keywords.

Each of these articles would then be published on my site with one link back to the home page, then once the articles are indexed.

I would submit the same article to ezine articles and place 2 keyword anchored backlinks in the resource box. One pointing to the same article on your site and another pointing to your home page.

I can guarantee that if you do this your site will slowly start to climb back up and even better... As your low competition articles begin to rany you will start receiving a lot more traffic even if your main keyword ranking is a little low.

Hope this helps,
Stephen.

Hi Stephen, how much time do you think, (bearing in mind we have very little knowledge of SEO), on SEOing? (not sure if thats a word).

It seems like we need to spend as much time on SEOing as we do on our actual jobs.

I also find if I read one article on the web about SEO, another will contradict it which just seems to confuse me.

There doesn't appear to be an authorative source, unlike tax, go to www.hmrc.gov.uk for seo there isn't a www.seo.co.uk

Yes , thats exactly why i just rent my website with them doing the seo , it can take over your life when you should be running the business ..

My advice get a company to do the website and seo as a package , if you just use a web design company and a seperate seo company they blame each other ..

Use 1 doing both and conversation goes "Your website Your seo sort it !!!"

;)

Mine works a treat i check the tags and stuff and i know if they are doing it right ,which is a bonus i guess ..

Sorry to keep asking questions, does anyone know what a pingback is? I've read the wordpress blurb and still don't get it. Is it like someone is trying to hack my news articles or something like that?

I keep getting them and don't know why.

Thanks for your help

Hi HPS

Pingbacks are basically just letting you know that someone's linking back to you. Always check to see where it's coming from in case someone is using your content - then contact them and ask them to remove it. But it may well be a nice person thinking your content's great and linking to you.

You may get them when links are being added within your own website as well.

SEO'ing is time-consuming and you need to keep it updated as well. But beware - there are a lot of SEO companies out there who charge a monthly fee for not doing very much at all, never mind using out-dated and unnecessary SEO practices, like submitting your website to the search engines.
