I don't know if this has been suggested before but how about a UKBF chatroom? Maybe a shoutbox on the site, a flash/ajax chatroom on a seperate page or even an IRC channel?

I think it would be a good way for regulars to hang out, chat and have discussions (which are not viable for a thread).

If there isn't one I'd be happy to host an IRC channel for these forums on a network I know of, providing it would get used.
 
I am on another forum which does have this chat room facility, but it tends to only happen on Saturday nights, and its purely as a chat facility ie getting to know each other. It does have the ability to ban people from the room the moment they make an inappropriate comment, but hasnt been used yet.

Its almost the same as using skype or msn ...

It might seem nice as a user, but some poor bugger ends up having to sit and moderate.

The next thing, I guess is some members would offer ... but then you get issues over login/access to look into.

So a chatroom would be lovely, but it's not practical in every case.

It's easy to assume people have unlimited resources/staff/cash to just do these things, but that's usually not the case.

It's quite easy to do it depending on the format. Opening an IRC channel is free and if a few people were made moderators then it should be well covered. The good thing about IRC is any advertisers or spammers can just be banned and to be honest I don't think people are going to go to the effort of advertising to the couple of people who would be there. There is also an ignore feature.

IRC is too fiddly for most people.

Mods still need the time and resources/staff/cash to sit there and moderate.

Feel free to set up an unofficial IRC channel though and post the network/channel here.

There is a $5 script called Flashchat which integrates well with vbulletin and has a certain amount of moderation available - plus it can be set so that only members can log into it.

Following the success of last nights 'temporary' chat room ;) I've setup something a little more permanant. [Click - The Unoffical UKBF Tea Room]
(Just for Keith!)

Simply enter your name and click "Login" no password is required. You will need Macromedia Flash Player in order to use the chat room but the majority of you should have it anyway.

I am a member of a chat forum and we have allocated staff members who are volunteers. I am one of them and I have a kick out button so I can boot people out if they misbehave!

We just have organised events in there like little seminars though rather than open it all the time.

It would be usefull for us and we could have breakfast networking sessions or special evenings on particular subjects of interest such as HR problems or business finance.

Yes the script I'm using we can do that too, it also saves all the past chats you can assign "mod" privileges along with admin. It also integrates with Vbulletin. :)

IMHO, what harm can u do with having one?
In some cases the members can self moderate can;t they?

I know this works fine on some sites.
After all what is the worse thing that can happen?

I actually really like this one you have set up. It looks nice, works with any browser, and would eb something I'd like to chat to you about at a later date.
I have a few things going on at the moment so it will have to be later though.

Who was picking on you Gill, tell me, I'll 'ave em for ya, just say the word.

Seriously a great chat room, very easy to use and a great cup of tea served at the back. Can see it really working for all those of you who generate business on-line. A structured meeting, bit like a BNI breakfast thing might work. Advertise a meet at a certain time, introductions and questions, chat put to those there. Something like that, you get the idea.
