Evening folks,

Perennial question......what makes a good letterbox flyer.

I employ a couple of door canvas teams to generate leads for roof coatings and fascias. Looking for ideas or help with designing a simple flyer for them to put through the letterbox of the 70% or so of houses that have no one in when they knock.

I have a high volume lase rjet printer but its only black and white...........would this be a plus or minus when designing a flyer as I'd like to keep printing inhouse to keep down cost.

Any advice or help will be greatly appreciated

Doubt you could match the cost of leaflets professionally done in the long run, they are very cheap to buy these days, as for design tips there have been many threads with suggestions over the last year or two, it might be worth experimenting with 3-4 versions to see what genertes the best response.

Im in the process of designing a flyer myself for all the big jobs on a property rewires,central heating, to full renovations.

I personally am going to use color as black and white is a bit boring, also you can get flyers made for quite reasonable prices these days , 10,000 for about £150 A5 that seems to be the average.

It has to stand out there are many things to consider, For instance many people put the business name as the large title, But that is incorrect it should be an eye catching slogan that makes people want to read further,

Its something that needs a lot of attention, the last thing i want to do is to get 10,000 delivered and no response im sure you are thinking the same.

Norman - have you tried the online free services such as freeindex.co.uk

With regards to flyers - you should get them printed proffesionaly - if you calculate ink, paper time etc it is cheaper to get them printed. ALso they are printed on a better quality paper.

If you design your flyer in word 2007 - you can convert to a PDF format - click save as and then PDF - this can them be emailed to whatever company you find that does the best deal

I used a local company to me - £75 for 5,000 lealets - I probably could have got them cheaper - but the company was down the road from me - which was more convenient than anything else

Hey Norman,
It’s likely to be the ads in colour that leap out first .Lots of research has gone into colour psychology and understanding how people retain information and respond to color. Human emotions are very often triggered by colour. Colour has become a science and we agree with the folks in white coats – it looks ace.
Full Colour is a system which allows a multiplicity of shades to be created from just four primary printing inks Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black (CMYK).

Hi Norman

Fair points about colour it is a must! but you can have all the colour you like but if you don't have decent relevant copy and you don't hit your your target market then it will make little difference.
Plus get the thickest paper you can afford 170gsm upwards the letterbox is a harsh enviroment you don't want your end potential customer getting an awful impression of your company with it all screwed up coming through the door.

If you need advice on printers there are good people on the forum like Minuteman Press or NeilDigital or I use a very good print broker as well I can PM if you like.

To have any success at all, any flyer has to have some kind of hook. An offer that gives the reader a reason to buy, something to make them think they are getting a good deal, and a reason to choose you over the competition.

Don’t forget to create the need and provide a call to action.

Using handwriting in marketing materials may take a little more time and effort but is sure to pay off in conversions. There is something about a handwritten letter that almost compels you to read it. Try it the next time you find something handwritten. Try throwing it out without reading it first, I bet you can’t. There is something personal in handwriting, as if the author has written it especially for you.
